Movie Updates

I got a couple of new digital offers for Avatar and Avatar Collector's Edition but the Collector's Edition is supposed to be 2 hours and 58 minutes long; whereas the image on the offer is indicating 2 hours and 42 minutes?

Maybe I'm thinking about the Extended Collector's Edition? So many different versions, it gets annoying.

I think that’s the collector’s extended cut, but it’s in HD.

I suspect that is something to do with purchases from different stores though in much the same way as already purchased movies being on my wishlist and unable to be removed.
Ahhhhh. Yes, that is quite possible. I suspect but don't know for certain that it's due to a difference in licensing on some movies between territories. If the movie is licensed through one studio/distributor in one territory, but a different one in another, then they may technically be different versions even though it's really the same movie.

Thanks for providing the screenshots, though. I will ask the store guys to take a look when they have a chance because it does seem like something that could be improved.

A search will only bring up these two, so maybe Kaleidescape doesn't carry the Extended Collector's Edition? I also checked under the "Other Editions" section of each title.

You will find it when you click “show special features.”

Yes, unfortunately the extended cuts of Avatar are only available in HD and only as Extras. (This is similar across all digital stores.)

You should be aware that since these cuts are Extras, watching them is really no different than watching an interview or deleted scene. As it's not a "feature" movie itself (from your K player perspective), it won't remember your pause position, the Play/Resume Movie buttons don't apply to it, etc. As the longest cut is over 3 hours, you'll want to take notes of where you leave off if watching in multiple sessions.

Get Smart (2008) in HD from Warner Bros upgraded to DTS-HD Master 5.1 from Dolby Digital 5.1

Also, from Friday, the following had Dolby Vision added...
Avatar (2009) with Dolby TrueHD Atmos from Twentieth Century

Avatar Collector's Edition (2009) with Dolby TrueHD Atmos from Twentieth Century

Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) with Dolby TrueHD Atmos from Twentieth Century

Avatar: The Way of Water Collector's Edition (2022) with Dolby TrueHD Atmos from Twentieth Century

Avengers: Endgame (2019) with Dolby TrueHD Atmos from Marvel Studios

Joker (2019) with Dolby TrueHD Atmos from Warner Bros

The Incredibles (2004) with Dolby TrrueHD Atmos from Pixar

That's cool...I don't think you can get that with lossless audio anywhere else (disc is DD 5.1).

How do I know what really got updated for each so that I can decide to revisit the movie.

The Dolby version? Are you using a flat panel? I find the Blu ray to look better than the K HDR version but the differences aren’t huge.

Yes I was using the Dolby version on my projector with the latest lumagen update compared with the 4k disc played through my nvidia shield.

Is it possible to get the Pirates of the Caribbean movies upgraded to the Atmos audio track found on the discs?

Most of us here doing comparisons have similar equipment (projectors or flat panels) but I’ll add the caveat this info is good because it makes a difference.

I primarily use my Sony 77A95L QD-OLED (calibrated) and find the DV to be amazing, but that is with my setup. I (personally and probably biased) think I am one who gets the most out of DV in this scenario vs. projector owners potentially (but not always) using DV on projectors with LLDV updates on a lumagen or MadVR video processor.

That being said, I’m interested to see the Bladerunner 2049 DV update. I tested Thor last night (as it was added in DV last week) and found it to be incredible, particularly in the final battle scenes on the rainbow bridge and end credits, where I feel the DV color gamut paired with my QD-OLED panel really shined and made a noticeable and enjoyable difference and upgrade to the HDR version of a movie I already love…..

The Dolby Vision versions on K are Profile 5 so ultimately they should be pretty much identical to the HDR10 version unless they did a more updated encode for some reason. They lack the benefit of FEL data, so for LLDV there really isn’t much point. For flat panels there may be a difference depending on how well the panel works with HDR10 vs Dolby.

The color palette should be identical as they are both 2020 color and 10 bit 420. Again, the only difference with a flat panel should just be the differences in the processing capability of the panel when viewing HDR10 vs Dolby Vision.
