Movie Updates

Does anyone think that we’re going to get the 4K update of Can’t Hardly Wait? It will be available on 4K blu ray Aug 20.
K has a bit of a backlog when it comes to catalog titles from Sony*, but I'd say there's a pretty decent chance. Generally the issue with Sony catalog releases is that they're not particularly timely. However, Apple is already streaming this title in 4K Dolby Vision, so it doesn't appear that there's a date restriction on it. Fingers crossed...

*Missing Sony 4K Updates: Heavy Metal, A Bronx Tale, Muppets Take Manhattan, The Last Dragon, Starman, Punch-Drunk Love, Paprika, +Rudy arriving without HDR or Director's Cut.

Zodiac now in DV (no audio changes)

Three more titles now in DV (no audio changes)

Excited for "We Were Soldiers" - one of my favorites!

I'm doing this manually BTW so if I'm not guaranteeing that's the only new ones, just what I noticed.

Thanks for this!

I run a check every day for my own movies but didn’t own any of these so wouldn’t have known otherwise.

Seems like the DV titles are being released at
1-4 total per day after QA process is completed, is that about right @MikeKobb ?

We got spoiled on that initial DV batch launch! 😂

I've noticed a few titles where the HD version has spatial audio, usually DTS-X, and the 4k version just has DTS 5.1. Atomic Blonde is an example. Do they ever update the 4k to spatial audio later?

Possibly if you cross your toes, knock your knees together, wish upon a celestial body and most importantly believe. Personally there are a few titles that are really screwing with my arthritis.

Send an email to K and hope for the best is the only advice I am capable of giving you I am afraid.

I’m not sure if that’s the actual rate, but it is basically just whenever the QA process completes. The team was working for quite awhile ahead of the launch to ensure that we had a good batch ready at release. There are many more coming. Many more.

Yes, this does happen sometimes. It’s a long and complex tale that has been discussed here in the past. Here’s the capsule summary:
  1. Kaleidescape does spatial audio (Dolby Atmos, DTS:X) when there is a lossless version available from the licensor.
  2. Sometimes there are only lossy versions available, which is what streaming services use. We don’t use those.
  3. Some licensors have separate business units for physical media and electronic-sale media (or even entirely separate distribution companies), and so there are sometimes cases where the assets that were created for physical media aren’t part of what the electronic-sale side of the business can distribute.
  4. Through a historic quirk in how our content licensing works, we are sometimes able to get the assets that were created for disc, but only for SD and HD.
Those factors sometimes combine to create what you’re seeing: lossless object-based spatial audio on the HD version, but not on 4K.

We are always working to add spatial audio to 4K versions when possible. If you buy a movie that initially has something like 5.1 or 7.1, and we later get a spatial track, you will be notified that an update is available, which you can download at no charge. If you check out the history of this thread, you’ll see that this happens pretty often.

Now you’re just teasing us 😂😂😂

Thank you for explaining why some 4k movies on K may lack a spatial audio track if said track exists on disk or streaming services. I had a lot of guesses in my brain, but nothing concrete.

Jason Bourne (2016) in UHD with Dolby TrueHD Atmos from NBC Universal added (previously (HDR/HD only)

HDR is still currently only DTS-HD Master 5.1 and HD is DTS:X

@MikeKobb , when is the next big batch? This week ? 🤞🏻

No big batches for Dolby Vision. They're being released as soon as they're done, a few at a time.
@MikeKobb , whenever you get a chance (if possible), would love the technical detail on process of converting current titles to a Dolby Vision add and what’s involved in the process.

I know you gave us the great detail in prior posts/threads on HD re-encoding and what’s involved with those titles but not sure how the DV adds are different and/or why it seems new titles on pre-order or upcoming (vs. existing titles) are automstically added.

I assume it deals with mezzanine file sourcing but just shooting in the dark….thanks as always for educating us less technical users!

@MikeKobb , thank you!

I completely forgot you had already answered this, apologies!

I blame the great work the team did on Frozen 2 Dolby Vision release for scrambling my brain after the kids watched it about 15 times this weekend 😂

Bob Marley: One Love now in DV (No audio changes):

Also Freelance (2023) starring John Cena has been delisted:
I was tracking it but it seems I missed out. :(

I'm only about a week since getting my Kaleidescape player and have a movie price question. There are a few titles I'm interested in purchasing because they are at the $9.99 price point. Is this typically the lowest price they will be without being on your D2D list?
