1U power supply replacement (maybe)

Personally, I would recommend going larger on something like this so that you aren't near the maximum capacity and stressing the supply which could lead to early failure. I've found over the years with electronics that its better to have some reserve capacity vs operating near or at the max limits. That 10A power brick would only be able to deliver 120W and if the 160W PicoPSU ever needs more than 120W, like during the server starting up, then the power brick will be drawn over its limits.

As another alternative to a 10A power brick, here's a link to one that can deliver up to 20A (240W). With a power brick like this you shouldn't ever have to worry, even if the PicoPSU momentarily spikes to 160W or even higher, the brick will have a 50% reserve above the 160W max.

The only downside I see with this larger power brick are its physical dimensions look to be too large to fit inside the server. That may or may not be an issue depending on your goals around the server's appearance and extra wiring/cords.
Currently using the 20A power brick and have it inside server. No heat issues or power failures. 👍

Thanks to @Mark H for the win on finding a replacement power supply for the 1U K1500 server! Big thanks to the community for all the support and insight!

Anybody know of any replacement power supply for a 1U that will work, doesn't need to be pretty and can be external with the cables fed through etc? Just would like to get an old 1U of mine working again.
Followed instructions from Mark, and I have a fully working 1U.
Thanks Mark !

Just to tidy the thread given I posted in another one a moment ago…

The Pico PSU solution is still rocking! :-)

Aukuoy 24Pin PSU ATX 12V DC Input 160W Peak Output Switch ATX Pico PSU Mini ITX PC Power Supply for Computer https://amzn.eu/d/6PlJIIU

There’s a “new” power brick in UK available that works perfectly too, this one is 150w, whether that is overkill or not, I don’t know.

12V 12.5A Power Supply - COLM 12Volt 12.5Amp 150W Adapter Charger Connector 5.5x2.5mm DC Plug Replacement 12V 10A 120W for PICO BOX DC-ATX PSU HTPC Mini PC/LED strips https://amzn.eu/d/6dNyE2M

And then to tidy it all up, these fit perfectly where the power lead would have gone previously

Question for everyone: When your power supply bit the dust, did everything go dead? Or was it certain portions of the Server that died while some still appeared to almost work? Like did any drives still spin or did you still see a front status light or ethernet activity?

For me when it started to fail it would just stop and then when left some time it would restart but sometimes the drives lit but didn't always spin as perhaps there was not enough power available from the PSU.
I'm still using the solution I posted back some time ago and it remains working.

Thanks. I’m working on a client’s which has a lit power indicator but no drive or network activity. Quick voltage measurements show voltage at the motherboard and at some points on the ATX connector. I have similar replacement parts on the way so we will see if support was correct in diagnosing the problem as a power supply issue.

Happy to report that Mark's solution worked for me as well. My 1U has been back online again for over a week and all is looking good. Huge thanks to Mark for this! Also big thanks to Tim for his additional advice on tidying the job up which has helped complete my repair nicely. More proof if needed that this forum is awesome!

Hi all,

Having successfully used Mark’s solution before as noted above, I’m now trying to replace the power supply on my other 1U server.

When I did it before it was a breeze, but this time I’m having trouble getting the chassis lid off. All screws are out but I get to step 12 of the official guide below where you slide and lift the lid but lid seems seized on and no amount of brute force seems to be able to open it! It’s been opened up previously as warranty sticker has been cut but I’ve had it for many years so maybe just an age thing?

Has anyone experienced similar and has any tips for getting the lid off safely?

Thanks! Michael

I got a 1U recently (from eBay) and I accidentally made the server decide to do a rebuild of its drives.
That seemed to have stressed its PSU (original) and it croaked.

I visited my brother recently, and since he's an Air Force trained electronics tech, I asked him to fix it.
Instead, we watched this video together and he told me how to fix it myself. (still, rather the trained guy did it, but brothers, right?).

He did make me this wiring device to make it easy for me:

And I selected this power supply, which almost fits:

The 1U is back to running and rebuilding its drives!

interestingly enough I was looking at my original post earlier this week as I had a 1U that had died ages ago and I had just left it in the rack as it was used primarily for music but had been replaced by a Roon server so I decided to replace the power supply as before and needed to check what I used. Quickly done but I put the power brick in the server this time and connected it to the internal socket terminals so a much neater solution that allows the external power socket to be used.
As an update the original 1U's that I deployed this solution too are still up and running 5+ years later.
