The Revenant in cinematic looks stunning, One of the or the best one so far if you ask me…
Now please do 1917 and i will shut up for a while ;-)
I just watched the first hour of The Revenant. OMG this is amazing looking, I couldn’t see any banding on my Oled G6 that was present on the previous version. HDR highlights give it a brighter detail and the image is crystal clear. I’m shocked at the difference the 4k Cinematic hdr made, the DTS 5.1 sounded very good. I give it top marks in the audio and video department. Highly recommended!!!!! 👍

Not necessarily. The original mix for this title is 3.0. So Kaleidescape likely ran it through their typical process which would have just left empty surround and lfe channels. And this quite likely also happens in the other directions with discs encoding and reporting empty channels as well.

Very interesting. However the link indicates a 3.0 Dolby Digital mix (most likely lossy). The 3.0 mix on the disc is dts-Hd MA

Fwiw, there is a UK release with a 5.1 track, unlike the US release.

IMDB lists the theatrical tech specs, not home release. This was a Dolby 3.0 mix for theaters.

What video and audio improvements can I expect with this new update over the previous version? Just wondering if the improvements are 'rewatch worthy' ;)

So the mezzanine file received by K included the original theatrical Dolby 3.0 audio asset and K (like you mentioned earlier) ran it through their typical process and converted it to 5.1?

Sorry for prolonging this, but I’m genuinely confused. I always thought that there was a separate audio mix (disc/digital) specifically created for home release.

There is generally a separate mix process for home release, but unless it's been a restoration many years later, I don't see any reason to think they would add surround for home on an initial release. Something like this without surround and without a lot of dynamics in the mix may have bypassed the separate home mix, but I have no evidence to back that up.

"Converted it to 5.1" is not how I would put it. Taking the surround sound stems and putting them into the process is technically a conversion, but it doesn't change channel alignment. If you cut off one of your fingers and put on a glove, you'll just have an empty finger hole in the glove. If you put a 3.0 folder into a preset for 5.1, it will come out with 3.0 audio in a 5.1 container, and silent channels. The "conversion" process is not doing any alteration to the mix or the channel alignment, it's just creating a DTS file instead of (likely) individual .wav files for each channel.

The studio also could've exported a set of 5.1 .wav files that only had audio on the 3 front channels.

I'm just saying that there's not likely a 5.1 mix, though I could be entirely wrong. Maybe they originally were going to do a 5.1 mix for theatrical and then decided to drop to 3.0. Maybe they really did take the 3.0 mix and create a 5.1 mix with an upmixer. I don't know what happened. But IMDB indicating it was a 3.0 theatrical mix tells me it's more likely that the mix was always intended to be 3.0 and either the Kaleidescape mix is 3.0 in a 5.1 container or they did some sort of automated 5.1 mix at the studio level (Kaleidescape is contractually prohibited from altering the actual mix), but even that is unlikely or they would have put that on the disc as well.
