Combined with the previously released Werewolf of London, we now have another wave of Universal Monsters sequels/spinoffs in 4K after receiving a wave last Halloween. Again, I'm always happy to see these titles and will be picking them up myself in time. Also, again, I have to point out that the last three waves of these titles (two 4K, one HD) have all proven to be less popular than the Elm Street sequels in SD.

I'm not saying we should have one rather than the other, simply that K's stated reasoning for denying us one holds no water in the face of releases like these. Give us the Elm Street films in 4K. The SD versions are already more popular than newer films you're adding; let's see what happens when these 27 year-old masters get updated!

Please. :)

How do you know what is popular and what isn't?

There’s a “Most Popular” sort order on the K Store (I use the web version). You can use it in combination with any filters and select Genre from the menu, So, go to Movies > Horror on the menu, Sort by Most Popular, and then dig in. Be aware that this sort is dynamic based upon sales, plays, etc. and therefore you can see things change over time.

Thank you, I hadn't noticed that in the sorting options. Hopefully this is a good tool to help me figure which titles in my wish list may get the Cinematic treatment sooner than others.

Just because one person who likes the movie plays it 5 times a day doesn't make the film "Most Popular" for all owners. This issue has been previously discussed with other films that ranked high on this list but were clearly not deserving of a truly Most Popular rating. Need to understand the parameters and assumptions that go into each category.

Yes, there are other factors that K will not disclose. Timing is obviously one as a new popular title will rapidly climb the charts but may settle further down the list. If a movie has been out for some time and settled from its "buzz" then I believe one can safely assume that the overall sales and watch numbers are playing a fairly significant role in their popularity (even if this results in titles I think should be more popular not appearing so).

Specifically regarding the use cases I'm calling out, the sequels to A Nightmare on Elm Street have been available on the K Store for over a decade in SD. Last year a series of Universal Monsters sequels hit in 4K Dolby Vision. Viewing horror titles sorted by Most Popular, most of the new 4K HDR titles fall below the SD Elm Street titles even though they're newer and higher resolution and should benefit from additional unseen popularity criteria. Therefore, can we not assume that more people have bought/watched the SD titles?

Certainly K has additional data they can look at that we can't see, and it could be that the data behind the scenes shows that the Universal Monster sequels do perform better to their criteria than the Elm Street sequels. Unfortunately, we can't see this so the best we can work with is the "Most Popular" sort.

What I recall at the time is that Mickey 17 was listed as one of the Most Popular which was more than preposterous.

Wait - how the hell do the Venom, Twilight and Pirates of the Caribbean movies earn “Horror” movie status?!? 😂😂😂

Some notes:
1. Mickey 17 was "leaked" onto K weeks early and may have benefitted from a sales boost during that brief period.
2. This was widely reported when it was dramatically pulled from sales and already downloaded copies were remotely deactivated (!!!).
3. There may have been another sales bump when the title returned weeks later due to the drama from the above.
4. The Strato V had came out the prior summer and the (cheapest) Strato M had just shipped producing a larger audience for new releases.

All of the above would contribute to Mickey 17 climbing on the popularity charts quickly. Right now it has settled into Page 5 of Most Popular sitting around World War Z, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, Thor: The Dark World, etc. This still puts it in the Top 5% of movies on the K Store overall but if you limit it to 4K releases it drops to 16%.

P.S. More than twice as many people have bought Mickey 17 on Blu-ray from Amazon in the last month than the Godfather Trilogy.

The younger generation has never heard of the Godfather but IMO it is still one of the greatest or the greatest movie of all time from the story to the dialogue to the cinematography to the actors and directors. I wouldn't dare pollute its reputation by even beginning to compare it to Mickey 17.

Ironically I tried watching it once and gave up early on when I saw the fakest fist fight ever.

Yes, very shallow of me. I need to try again someday and get past that lol.

That was 55 years ago from the same director of Apocalypse Now a few years later. Forget the fist fight and follow the script, dialogue, plot, cinematography, level of acting (Brando, Pacino, DeNiro, Duvall, Keaton, and many other soon to be stars). GF I and GF II are phenomenal movies and masterclasses in filmography. We saw it with another couple. He was a US Attorney who loved it!

Try it again for the story! I doubt you will be disappointed.

Since that we are talking about Frankenstein and the Universal films, what about the 2025 Frankenstein from Guillermo del Toro? Can't seem to find that on the K Store?

I believe it is being released by Criterion on 4k uhd disc very soon? Kscape doesn’t support Criterion releases at this time.

I asked this somewhat related question previously and never got an answer.

I purchased No Country for Old Men in 4K on hard disk from Criterion only to find the 4K version available shortly thereafter on Kscape.

Is the Kscape 4K different from the Criterion 4K version or are they the same? I was suprised to see it on Kscape because I also was led to believe Kscape does not have access to Criterion releases.
