Project Hail Mary

Same! Mine's allegedly on its way too. I don't think I have a single IMAX ratio film at home. I would love to see both Dune films released with 1.43:1. I'd just scoot my chairs closer.

I'm curious to see how the Lumagen and MadVR Envy video processors handle the shifting aspect ratios on this PHM disc. I have a Lumagen, so can share once I receive this mythical disc set. @Broncowrangler what's your setup, and do you have any feedback yet?

The Lumagen has a 4:3 aspect ratio mode, which is skinnier than 1.43:1, so it will work just like any other [gimmicky] VAR movie and switch between the two ratios.

IIRC, PHM does a move to the skinnier aspect ratios, though, which means the Lumagen and MadVR will step between the two instead of an instant aspect change like it does with the less gimmicky straight cut to a different ratio.

Haven’t watched it yet. But I will get back and report my observations. I have a 160” 16:9 screen. (moved away from scope few years ago).

Read the review online and really disappointed regarding this...;

From the images, we knew it was three discs - but that was it. What was that third disc? Was it a Director’s Cut? Nope - it’s the true blue 1.43:1 IMAX experience with alternating aspect ratios. Note - I say alternating, not shifting. The 1.43:1 “box” ratio is maintained throughout, leaving the 2.39:1 memory scenes to look like old non-anamorphic widescreen transfers from the DVD era. So those scenes are not only letterboxed, but also pillarboxed. Cue the internet rage… … … now.

😨

I just watched a video showing the difference between the two and I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything by not getting the IMAX version.

Thought the previous release was good enough (well.., even better imo) with the Shifting 2.00:1 / 2.39:1

It's funny, I watched a YouTube video yesterday where the reviewer was trying to change their TV settings to fill the screen with the scope image. Um, no, that's specifically what you bought. It's the "True IMAX Experience". The screen is one width and the image gets taller. That's the point. Weird? Yes. Because replicating the spirit of the IMAX experience is what is already being done, but if you want the full 1.43:1 then you deal with smaller/lower resolution scope data.

Also, as has been shown on this title (and others theatrically like the Dune series), the "Full 1.43:1" images are cropped. In fact, nearly all scenes in all movies (including IMAX) are cropped from open matte either vertically or horizontally. So, for this title, every time the screen becomes extra tall and gives you a little bit more vertical image, it actually provides less horizontal image than found on the normal home release.

I view this release as an interesting novelty that will likely be long pointed to when people say they want "The Real IMAX Version!" Um, no you don't. :)

Here’s an another decent review.

I did a brief test drive of the disc and my observations mirror that of the review posted above.

Overall, I’m really glad I picked up the set. The regular version (2.39:1/ 1.78:1 - available on the standard release) is also included in this 3 disc set, along with a book and some other cool collectibles.

I believe the set is currently sold out so I guess there was a huge demand for this. A must have (imho) for all PHM fans out there.

We watched “Runner” on Kscape on Saturday night . It is a very good action movie . If you are a fan of action movies check this one out. It was new to Kscape this week . Alan Richtson (Reacher) and Owen Wilson star in it. Filmed in Australia.

I got my disc set, played the disc file on my Plex server, and had the same experience.

Furthermore, the Lumagen didn’t do any shifting when the image went to scope. I think because the image isn’t actually scope. There’s a lot of lighting effects flickering in the space of the horizontal black bars. So it’s still a 1.43:1 image during those flashback scenes.

There is extra image gained at the top and bottom of the screen, but nothing meaningful. Spot checking shows a bit more floor and ceiling inside the ship and a bit more black space outside the ship. I haven’t sat through this fully, but don’t really want to. The extras also don’t seem worthwhile, they’re some paper book I haven’t flipped through and a PHM patch that doesn’t look like an astronaut patch at all. I’ll likely still display the box set since that at least has interesting art on it. But overall, I don’t recommend getting this set or worrying about missing out on it since it’s sold out.

I usually like having all the alternate cuts of a film for a bit of variation in storytelling, but this isn’t even that. The content is the same, just framed in a way that would be optimal only if you were watching it on a 1.43:1 screen. It’s suboptimal on my scope screen. Scooting my chair forward isn’t worth it for more white floor and black space. All of which looks a bit faded anyway, compared to the richer, deeper picture from the 4K Cinematic file we already have. Which easily remains the best home version of the film.

If you're keeping the 1.43:1 file somewhere, here's the custom art I made for it. It's the IMAX teaser poster with actor names, taglines, and other text details removed using Canva.

I also added it to my A1 Poster Replacement Repository here:
