Video of Modular Disc Vault

So if the IDV has an inbuilt player then there's no need for an M300/500? And, is there any prospect that one day in the future it will be possible to write a BR disc to a server from a M500 and not need to store the disc in the IDV, same as what we do now for DVD? Or has Kaleidescape completely abandoned that idea? It's just that there is no prospect of me freeing up 5U of space in the rack and I'd like to store all my BR discs in a box in the cupboard.

That's correct, the IDV has it's own built-in BR import/playback capability.

I believe K continues to pursue the ultimate goal of importing/storing as we currently do for DVD while providing us with an alternative solution. Personally, I have no problem with the current solution as it accomplishes exactly what I've been looking for to deal with my now rather extensive BR collection, and it makes no difference to me that the BR disks are in a vault rather than a box in the attic (cost and space aside). I still get the K experience I've come to rely on when accessing my collection.:)

I wonder if the MDV and IDV can be used concurrently (and seamlessly) in order to provide 400-disc storage/playback? That way, the MDV could be purchased now without fear that it would become useless if one wanted to purchase the IDV next year.

It is seamless, they work independently of each other in the system.

Jim

For a person who's held off buying BlueRay discs until this type of solution was available (I don't want to repeat the nightmare of hunting for a particular disk amongst hundreds ever again), buying a modular vault now while building up the collection and moving to the IDV later as the collection size gets larger would be a nice option. Not sure what their plans for chaining these devices are, though.

There is no "chaining" required, both operate independently within the K system. Having both in a system is not a problem.

Jim

But we would not be able to plug the MDV directly into the IDV because of the 1-drive-only limitation... correct?

What you are asking is not necessary. Whether using the MDV or IDV, once the disk is imported and stored the system "records" this info and the BR movie can be accessed by any player in the system directly from the Server. The MDV and IDV are not accessed in the playback process.

Jim

Also, just want to confirm that a second read of the product release note (sorry for missing this the first time) confirms that the IDV is indeed a 5U device.

Jim

In order to be able to import a BR and not need a physical disc to be housed in a player or changer, I think the BR copy association or whomever decides these things, would have to change their rules and regulations and it doesnt seem likely.

While I am disappointed about the lack of high res internal decoding to date, I have to say Kaleidescapes approach with the vault is very smart. I agree with you Jim, whether the discs are in storage in boxes in my attic or basement or in a changer is meaningless. The only bummer is the need to buy more equipment. I have over 300 BR discs so I will needs a few vaults.
