US Digital Releases for September & October 2026

I know many will disagree but I welcome the day when theaters go the way of the laserdisc.
Currently, theatrical releases account for over 90% of a movie's total revenue so I think we're a long way from this world.
The main reason I’d be against it though is I can’t imagine them bothering to make lossless audio mixes if it’s only ever going to be played on devices not capable of outputting lossless audio (streamers) ... We’d see the same audio regression we got when everyone switched to MP3 and just have years of new releases with terrible audio until they thought they could milk us again for lossless tracks.
I agree and think it could be the same for video. Right now we're in a bit of a golden age of 4K releases of small, obscure, and cult titles as boutiques scrape together the last few physical media dollars out there. As digital consumers we're all looking forward to the day that these titles become available to us and we can move beyond discs. But, what happens then? Is any studio going to do a 4K remaster of Cloak & Dagger so that it looks better on Netflix?

The difference is the studios still provide the same mezzanine video file for both disc and streaming, and there's no reason to think they wouldn't still just provide the same file for everyone to apply their secret sauce to.

Audio is different, and there's a reason they don't provide the same lossless audio file to digital stores and disc producers. I don't know what exactly that reason is, but obviously they sometimes deliver a lossy audio master file and not a lossless master.

Just watched your YT Vid on the K system very nice sir... (I obviously feel like the need to encourage us low level scruffy type folks to buy Steelbooks and Boutique discs was a strike) but hey 🤷‍♂️

That's true for new releases, but for older movies, it's often the boutique disc companies that fund the restoration. Without discs and their revenue stream, those companies don't exist, and the restoration may not be justifiable. You can sell enough $25 copies of a movie to justify the work right now, but there's no way it's ever going to get funded out of how many subscribers it gets Netflix.

Given they make most of their money from initial theatre releases, I’m not so sure it is a good idea, although I guess you could argue the ridiculous marketing budgets could be removed if it was free through the online platforms.

The main reason I’d be against it though is I can’t imagine them bothering to make lossless audio mixes if it’s only ever going to be played on devices not capable of outputting lossless audio (streamers) as Kaleidescape isn’t a big enough market and in that eventually discs will already be gone. We’d see the same audio regression we got when everyone switched to MP3 and just have years of new releases with terrible audio until they thought they could milk us again for lossless tracks.

Not that I’m helping to keep them alive on that front but then I have my own HT room that other than scale is better than commercial cinemas which most people don’t have but I do spend a lot more on home releases than I ever did in the cinema.
Yeah, as I said...just a dream.

Move budgets have gotten out of hand....and consequently expectations of what his hit or flop........costs of running commercial theaters have undoubtedly gone up....so we end up with crazy expensive movies to make...crazy expensive tickets to watch them+insanly priced junk food =P..and unrealistic box office expectations. All that to me has really hurt the movie business as a whole......so we end up with more crap than good.

For us...we are looking at at least a 30-40m drive just to get to a halfway decent theater(i am being kind)...all thru crazy traffic...when gas costs $4+/gallon only to have to pay ridiculous ticket and snack prices.......and then to sit with a bunch of idiots with their unruly kids and lit up cell phones. Get off my lawn I say!

I would gladly pay a premium price for new releases if K were allowed to be considered for theatrical release window. Even $100 would be big savings(and not just in terms of $$) compared to going to a theater. I know this idea has been discussed on other threads so I know others feel the same. Way i see it...Doomsday comes out.....yeah wanna see it big time....no way ill go to a theater....so studio can get $100 for me now....or $30 in a few months...their choice.

Honky Tonk (1941) in HD with DTS-HD Master Mono from Warner Bros

Manhattan Melodrama (1934) in HD with DTS-HD Master Mono from Warner Bros

Rose Marie (1936) in HD with DTS-HD Master Mono from Warner Bros

The Prisoner of Zenda (1952) in HD with DTS-HD Master Mono from Warner Bros

It’s the end of the month so of course we’re seeing another batch of Universal catalog titles hit digital. And, as always, K is going to grab a random sampling of these newly available HD titles. What else are they to do? Fulfill HD requests from owners? Upgrade some “stuck in SD” titles particular to the season? Or, perish the thought, use those resources to get The Blair Witch Project: Restored (HD) just in time for Halloween? No, dartboard some randos; that’s the way. Sigh.

Abandoned (1949) in HD with PCM Stereo from NBCUniversal

Magicians (2007) in HD with DTS-HD Master 5.1 from NBCUniversal

Mighty Mary (2026) in SDR/HD with DTS-HD Master 5.1 from Paramount

What is up with the Recently Added page? Whistle, The Plague, Night Patrol, and Dolly???

"Hey guys, since its Halloween and we didn't get any of the titles that you actually want*, here's a bunch of horror movies from earlier in the year already in the store that we probably shouldn't have added and no one bought. Happy Halloween!"

*The Blair Witch Project: Restored, Train to Busan 4K, House of 1000 Corpses 4K, Repo: The Genetic Opera 4K

P.S. Don't worry, I'll do my normal Halloween post-mortem and then the cranky pants will return to their drawer for a while. :)

Green Lantern: The Animated Series (Season 1, Part 1) — Rise of the Red Lanterns (2011) in HD/SD from Warner Bros

Returned
Night Patrol (2025) in SDR/HD with DTS-HD Master 5.1 from AMC Entertainment

Universal's end-of-month HD catalog drop for October has been added at the bottom of the first post.

(To be clear, I think it's awesome that Universal has been adding so many titles to digital distribution and pick up a number of these on other stores. Whether or not K should be prioritizing these over other titles is my only point of criticism.)

UPDATE: November & December uploaded.

Since that we are talking about Frankenstein and the Universal films, what about the 2025 Frankenstein from Guillermo del Toro? Can't seem to find that on the K Store?
Frankenstein is a Netflix film and may never appear on K.

However, I watched it last night and have to say it's something else. The acting, costumes, sets and cinematography are top notch. The story is a bit ponderous especially in the beginning, however, the more I watched the more I got into it. It's more psychological with limited action than many on this forum would like, however, I enjoyed it and will definitely buy it if it ever gets to K. It's a beautiful production.

Jacob Elordi plays the creature and proves, at least to me, that he can't be the next 007 after taking this role even though his diction and grammar are certainly impressive. He certainly plays interesting roles.

Interested in other thoughts on this film.

Care to share why JE can’t play 007?

Not disagreeing just curious.

I don't think he exhibits the polished, sophisticated, suave and debonair demeaner one expects of 007. For me, it will be hard to separate my memory of him in this role as the creature in Frankenstein. Don't recall Sean Connery, Roger Moore, or Daniel Craig in a similar role. This is my issue that may not bother others.

Before I move on from the September/October thread, I wanted to call out a use case we saw during this period that points to K's title prioritization that I frequently comment on.

On July 21st, 2026 there were two digital releases from Sony that were not added to the K Store: The 4K Catalog Upgrade of The 7th Voyage of Sinbad and new-to-video Unidentified. On September 10th, K added Unidentified to the K Store. Whether this title was in the pipeline the whole time or if K "went back" to get it is unknown. What is known is that after nearly two months on the store this title remains at the very bottom of the Most Popular sort. And, I don't mean of 4K titles, dramas, or any other subset. When looking at all movies in the K Store this title has 11 titles below it, 6 of which are pre-orders.

Now, do I believe that this is better than The 7th Voyage of Sinbad 4K would have done? No, I do not. And, I can't imagine anyone seeing it any other way, even K. I'll continue to die on this hill: If resources are limited and choices are to be made, a studio's 4K Catalog Upgrades should always be chosen over a lesser-known direct-to-video (or limited theatrical run) titles. Although there will always be exceptions, I am positive that this shift in prioritization will yield higher overall sales. (When those rare "gems" are passed over on initial release, K can simply add them later rather than continue to build up the mountain of missing of 4K Upgrades.)

To put an even finer point on this, as we see people making requests for 4K Cinematic Upgrades for their new Strato K's, how many of the titles were released in the last 5 years? People want 4K Catalog Titles K, stop putting them at the bottom of the list...

I think you’re right. I ended up buying 7th Voyage of Sinbad 4K on disc.

I also purchased Sinbad 4K disc and figured it wouldn't come to Kaleidescape. Sony titles are the most frustrating to me on this platform. Sony does fantastic transfer work. This should be a studio at the top of the K scape offerings. I guess as long as Sony Pictures Core is still around, its streaming competition.

To be clear, there's no evidence Sony considers K competition for Core or is in any way denying assets to K. Sometimes K doesn't release their 4K upgrades to digital stores (Stand by Me, Monty Python & The Holy Grail) but this appears to be entirely K not selecting the titles. :(
