US BR & 4K Releases for September & October 2025e

Added in 4K SDR/HDR/DV with DTS-HD MA 5.1
From Sony

This Beastie Boys title is fantastic. If you have AppleTV+ it's included on there and probably not worth buying here, but if you don't have ATV+ I'd highly recommend it as a rental. Even if you're not a huge fan, it's really interesting, and a pretty great story of growth.

HUGE credit to K for this one. Instant purchase. Completely unexpected. VERY happy to see this added. I'd love to see more, and the only way to do that is to show that there's demand. Thank you, K! Bought. I hope others do too.
Alas I can’t get behind this if it’s still the lesser release without Atmos compared to disc. I’d still keep this in the disc exclusive list, like the 12 discs I ripped last week that have HDR instead of K’s SDR.

I think I saw earlier that Atmos on this is a disc-exclusive at the moment and no digital services have it.

As for HDR/SDR, I waffle on that one a little. Obviously I would prefer all the choices available. But Kris has made a pretty good argument, and I've seen it firsthand, that the Kaleidescape SDR versions are pretty solid alternatives, in some cases better, in a projection system. I've still not ordered the Heathers disc, nor have I bought the 4K SDR version on K. But it's still in my wish list and I'm still watching it. I want it in HDR - especially a title so rooted in color as that one. But I'm willing to bet the new SDR version will be much better than my blu-ray rip.

Looks like a catalog heavy release week. Bit sad that it is random HD titles and not a catch up on catalog 4K, especially given the holiday week and massive backlog of high profile 4K horror titles that would be extremely fitting this week.......
“Random” is exactly the word I’ve been reaching for to describe K’s catalog releases. K is settling into being good for current releases but random on catalog. Alas I primarily like older movies, so my ratio of disc to K purchases is widening from 2:1 to now 3:1. Hmmm.
I know these titles seem really weird and I often assume that K is digging up old customer requests when we see stuff like this, but the more I look into weeks like this it's often a bunch of digital re-releases from the current week. It just so happens that the week is filled with some updated digital licenses/distribution and K opts to get a bunch of the titles.

Honestly, when these kinds of weeks occur, I'd much rather K seriously consider the titles at hand and determine whether they should clear some stuff off the backlog. "Oh, not much this week, just a bunch of random old HD titles. Let's get 'em all!" Um, no. Go get Drive.

Having said that, The Door in the Floor has been unavailable digitally for quite a while and in the last couple of months I imported a German Blu-ray in order to have it in HD. So, it was quite a surprise to see it on K (and after looking, Apple) so I grabbed it right away.

I'd still rather have Drive. Or 50 other movies K has skipped.

Yes, that seems fair to me too. SDR on projection and Atmos in general are not as huge a leap as 4K itself, they are very dependent on the source. To my eye, HDR is 80% about the color gamut, and 20% about the dynamic range. The actual "HDR" part of it has only been clear to me on the BFI Kurosawa discs so much so that I'm just not buying Criterion Kurosawa at all anymore.

I have Heathers in my queue, I can share some thoughts once I see it?

I see that too, this is likely a reflection of what is being released to digital stores this week. Which K can't do much with.

I would also like to have Drive on my K. It's become a core top tier film I discovered though you and I think @thrillcat talking about it here. I think that one is based on Sony Pictures being weirdly inconsistent in what it offers to digital, right? That's not available on other digital platforms I don't think.

4K Dolby Vision readily available on every other digital store since earlier this year. Yes, some Sony stuff isn't available digitally like the recent Monty Python and the Holy Grail. But this one hit digital at physical release, K passed, and it's on the great Sony backlog list.

Surprise release on Apple's TV App (iTunes) overnight:

An American Werewolf in London in 4K HDR from Universal

Usually K is pretty good with Universal 4K Catalog updates but they've recently started slipping behind a bit. Let's hope we see this added.

Not sure where you see that because I checked both iTunes and Apple TV and it still indicates that it is HD only for me.

If you already own the HD version then it'll show HD. However, there should be an option to buy the 4K version (it's a separate listing).

Apple's attempt to "clean up" the whole store vs. library vs. service vs. family thing is also somewhat of a mess. Net positive, maybe?

Hm.. I see it available for purchase in 4k on the Apple TV app.

Yeah, they don't make it easy to find. The first screen shows what I found when doing the search. I had to scroll down on the Apple TV 4K device in order to find the purchase 4K version. Even the rental shows as HD only. Very strange!

Yeah, I think Apple got tired of so many "Apple took my movies away!" articles (every one of these is false, FYI). Since people couldn't understand the difference between the store and the library, Apple basically wiped it out. Great if you "Just want to hit Play!" but terrible if you're the one playing an active role in movie acquisition and library management. :(

3D on the AVP made this significantly worse as you'll simply see the little headset logo but have no idea where the title is available in 3D and if it's even available to you. Plus, the logo will only appear if viewing on an AVP.

I have to admit...now over a year of having K...for first 8 months or so K was all we watched movies on. But last 4 months or so its once in a blue moon...been having to go back to disc/rips and/or streaming for some of our preferred versions of favorite titles.

It's now on Fandango@Home in 4K HDR as well:
