Two Questions About Kaleidescape from Newbie

Hello All

I got a Strato V Kaleidescape system earlier this year but only in the last month or so have I had a chance to use it on a regular basis. Prior to getting the Kaleidescape system, I used to rent 4K BluRay discs and watch them using my Oppo 205 disc player. I am finding out that there are a few things that appear to be different between the two systems, so I thought I would ask here just in case I was not using the Kaleidescape system correctly. Here goes:

1) Two Saturdays ago, I started watching a movie on Kaleidescape but could not finish it. I figured I would resume the movie this past Friday. But when I cued up the movie, it did not resume from the spot I had left at the previous week (6 days earlier). It started from the beginning of the movie and I had to fast forward to the point where I had left off. Is this normal? I ask the question because I did an experiment later that evening. I started watching a movie, then switched to another movie for about 30 min, and then went back to the first movie to see if it would resume at the spot where I had left off 30 min earlier. It did! So I began to wonder if the system only remembers where one stopped a movie as long as the Kaleidescape is on but forgets it when the system is turned off? Or is there is a feature in the menu I need to turn on to get the system to remember where I stopped a movie even if a week has gone by?

2) When I used to watch movies on 4K BluRay discs, there were a lot of chapter markers in the menu so it was easy to get to a particular scene that one was looking for. It appears that there are far fewer chapter/scene markers in Kaleidescape. Is this true? Or is there some way to call up a more detailed chapter/scene marker?

I love my system but I am learning that there may be some differences with a physical disc. Thanks in advance for your help.

The system can definitely resume movies even if it has been turned off. It never forgets the resume position unless you manually clear it out under “more options -> forget paused location” or start playback from the beginning instead. Is it possible when you went to start the movie again, you accidentally clicked “Play Movie” instead of “Resume Movie”? Play movie will start it from the beginning instead of resuming.

I have paused movies and shows from months ago that still have their positions saved.
 
Once you have started a movie there are 2 play option - "play movie" and "resume movie". The first plays from the beginning and the second resumes from where you left off. Only if you delete and re-download would it loose your place.
 
Thanks for the quick responses from both of you. It seems likely that I clicked the wrong button when I wanted to resume watching a movie. As I mentioned, I did an experiment on Friday and the system definitely gave me the option to resume the movie. So clearly I hit the wrong button the first time. I am glad to hear that the option is still there for me to use!

In regards to chapter navigation and playback controls in general it could be much improved. For a premium player it's behind the times.
 
Keep in mind that if you simply press the PLAY button on a title (without opening its details), the "resume movie" option will be engaged (assuming there is one).

There are chapters in Kaleidescape titles in addition to the scenes, and you can create custom scenes if you are using them frequently. But keep in mind that deleting a movie from your system will not retain custom scenes when you redownload it.
 
Thanks for confirming that the tabs for chapters/scenes on Kaleidescape are not as extensive as on a disc. That is disappointing but c'est la vie!

You can't call up chapters like you can on a disc, but you can skip chapter by chapter. I find that I don't miss the chapter selection feature as much, since the scenes functionality fills the role I was using chapter selection for in the past, namely finding cool scenes to re-watch or demo. On that note, you can create playlists of scenes from different films, which K calls scripts. The UI is a bit clunky, but both Thrillcat and I have posted scripts in the resources part of this forum, that I recommend you download and enjoy!

... and accepting a Kaleidescape "update" on that movie will also (often? or always? i forget) delete your user-created scenes unfortunately.

Thanks for the tip, Edgar. I did not realize that one could use the skip function to move to the next chapter. Nice. I will also check out the resources part of this forum as you have suggested.

Is it a "common" practice for folks to setup a script, so they could quickly re-load the scenes upon redownload (V/E/M,) or does the likelihood of rewatch (particularly compared to the risk of update) make the effort not worthwhile?
