Strato V Dynamic Range and Colorspace Issues

For what it's worth, we don't do "fake HDR" if the player is outputting SDR content as Dolby Vision. i.e., we don't try to boost the dynamic range or anything. SDR's color and dynamic range are a true subset of Dolby Vision, so the player just outputs the SDR content within the larger Dolby Vision colorspace and dynamic range.

How this looks compared to outputting as SDR will depend on your display's processing. Some displays will boost SDR brightness to utilize more of the display's brightness capability, for example, and that could make SDR output in its native format look brighter than SDR output as Dolby Vision.
Yeah in retrospect it does sound slightly egregious the way I chose “fake” to describe it. What I was really trying to articulate was something on the lines of forced/enhanced.

Yeah i was slightly surprised when I noticed a significantly brighter image/ highlights. Sure enough when I checked on my display, it indicated Dolby vision, even though the native source was SDR.

That's honestly opposite behavior to what I would have expected. But as I said, it depends on the display.

Yeah, this was only when I chose the “minimize display changes option” whereas all the other modes showed up correctly as SDR. Could be display dependent like you are alluding to, but it is also surprising that this happens when you are essentially trying to minimize display changes.

I got my Strato V today and downloaded a Dolby Vision title
My V is connected to Anthem AVM90 then through Altona HDR switcher to an LG 77 OLED
I used the provided HDMI cable (nice stuff)
The LG INPUT is set for deep color
Playing the movie the LG reports HDR BT2020
Should it show DV?
Thanks

Do you see the Dolby Vision badge appear on the top right corner on the Lg? Secondly since you have routed this through the anthem, what is the processor’s osd reporting?

Looking at K advanced video settings/HDR format it says my display supports HDR10, so DV content will be converted to HDR10. The LG is 5 years old and it advertises it is DV compatible……alway something !

Is it a C9? I have a C9 as well in the living room maybe I could help.

You could try temporarily connecting the player directly to the display (bypassing the processor), just to be sure that the processor isn't changing the EDID information.

Preach it, brutha!!! 🙏🏼♥️

Is that input (where the v is plugged in) on the tv in the correct Dolby Vision Cinema mode?
the input is set for deep color: all of the available video modes on the LG are HDR modes from the V
can you confirm you are seeing DV on your C9?

Ii haven’t connected the V to the C9. But I have no issues getting Dolby vision on the C9 through my 4k Blu-ray player and streamers.

I connected the LG C9 OLED directly to the Strato V and the badge now shows Dolby Video….
But since the V has only a single HDMI out….I have no way to get HD audio….

Does the C9 offer eARC? You can also get a cheap 4K60p HDMI splitter with one leg going to the C9 and the other to the AVR.

Can you try removing the Altona HDR switcher? If that works it looks like it has a lot of custom settings that maybe able to be adjusted.

Excellent. Just the kind of data point we needed. So now we know that something else between your Strato V and your display is affecting the EDID information so that the Strato doesn’t see the Dolby Vision compatibility. I agree with @Golfx — try going Strato -> Anthem -> Display if you can, and see if that works. If so, that will confirm that the Atlona is where your focus should be. Hopefully the settings that @Golfx mentioned will be the solution.

The Atlona manual says it is DV compatible: EDID can be set per input (I would need help!)
It works fine for HDR: but not DV

That's good news. Sounds like you probably just need to set the EDID on the input in question and you'll be good to go.
