NEWS: Strato K Movie Player with 8K capability and new "4K Cinematic" full-chroma & higher bitrate support

I have a basic system with a Strato C and a Compact Terra. The new video format is certainly one incentive to upgrade to a Strato K, but just as appealing to me would be the ability to use that fast 1TB of flash storage (since I have access to 2 Gbps fiber internet). With the price of flash storage these days, to pay for it and not be able to use it is definitely a disincentive to upgrade. A Strato K without storage at a lower price would also be a good solution, as mentioned by others already.

Further down-thread someone pointed out that the Strato K only has 1 Gbps Ethernet, so that pretty much defeats the idea of faster downloads to its internal flash storage. My Compact Terra Prime HDD with 2.5 Gbps Ethernet should be faster than the Strato K already.

Related question......can a Standalone V and Standalone K on the same network combine their storage?

Was watching AudioAdvice's video on Strato K. They tested a pre-production unit. In comments someone asked the question many are wondering and their response was what I would have expected and glad they are being honest about it.

Is there obvious picture improvement compared to Strato V? My current set up is Strato V and JVC NZ800. It sounds like the picture improvement may not be that noticeable?

@AudioAdvice
We would say it’s not “obvious” unless you know what you’re looking for on a large screen. The NZ800 is an incredible projector and you could see some slight improvements with the K. However, if you like your image now, we wouldn’t say it will make a huge difference. But if you want something a little more future proof and push the image a touch further, this is the one.

I’m using Pixelgen (the one supplied by Kscape as well) across the board. I’m absolutely certain that the K would come with the Pixelgen cable included and should be perfect for this application. It’s ultra high speed-8k/60 certified.
I spoke with Kaleidescape yesterday. They informed me that it ships with an Audioquest 8k certified cable

Doesn't really matter as almost all HDMI chains have some type of conversion in them. OSD overlays from an AVR/SSP will usually change the input/output if you use them as a switcher. ...
Shame the sK doesn't have dual HDMI to avoid this.

edit: I have a bunch of movies that I like to keep local to my StratoS to watch spur of the moment, no Terra. How is the sK at upscaling from non-4K movies? Then I would be able to keep those dozen or two files in SDR and save that 4K space for cycling through more FOTM movies....

As a US dealer I can answer this question. In order to speed things up, we can make arrangements to have Kaleidescape shipments dropshipped directly to a client.

Cheers,
Alan

PS. While we don’t have tracking info yet, we are expecting our first Strato K shipments to leave the factory this coming week.

All the sudden getting "New version available" update notifications...but they show "Added 4k Dolby Vision" as the upgrade....these titles already had 4k Dolby Vision versions. Not that it matters since I do not use the DV versions of movies...just seems odd.

That is only viable to have them drop ship if you have a tax ID in the destination state and manage sales tax collection with the customer. For example, I only have a physical nexus in Michigan, so I have to collect sales tax in MI, but no where else. A customer ordering from me in TX or whatever, I don't charge sales tax, but the unit ships to me in MI (where I have the tax ID) and I reship.

If I were to ask Kscape to drop ship the same order to TX, then they would collect TX state sales tax from me, and I would collect it from the customer. @AlanG maybe you have physical or economic nexus in multiple states or your customers are all in your local state or you are just charging the sales tax?

Can a particular title e.g Project Hail Mary be downloaded on both platforms (V and K) simultaneously? Obviously cinematic on the K and the DoVi/HDR/SDR on the V.

Does the new Strato K use the same 4K format for store titles without 8k or 4k Cinematic like the Strato V ala "Strato HD compatability" or classic 4k?

Strato K can play all of the same 4K Dolby Vision, 4K HDR10, 4K SDR and HD movies that are playable on Strato V/E/M.

Yes, you would set the two players up as individual systems, and then you target downloads to either one of them in the format you choose.

To answer your question Techthusiasm, if I arrange for dropshipping directly from Kaleidescape to a client who is outside of our state of MA, that means that I have Kaleidescape charge me sales tax. I in turn charge my client. I agree that it is easier to get a bulk shipment from Kaleidescape and then ship or deliver things to each individual client from the store. But of course as we are a high end specialist, we all about highly personalized service. So if a client wishes to get something from Kaleidescape overnight, we jump through whatever hoops we have to! If you have more questions you can DM me.

BTW I’ve seen a few of your videos, good job!

Dear Wallscreen-Skylounges LLC:

A Kaleidescape Sales Order (N) authorized by your Purchase Order: Demo has been approved for shipment. In most cases, orders will ship within three to five business days. You will receive a final notification when your order has shipped.

I dragged up all the titles I could find with 8K scans for the entirety of the picture:

Oppenheimer
Dirty Harry
The Wizard of Oz
Ben-Hur
The Sound of Music
2001: A Space Odyssey
My Fair Lady
West Side Story (1961)
Gone With the Wind
Lawrence of Arabia
Purple Rain
Seven
Baraka
Samsara
Lethal Weapon
Sinners
Rebel Without a Cause
North by Northwest
High Society
The Searchers
Doctor Zhivago
Hello, Dolly!
Oklahoma!
Patton
Pale Rider
It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World
South Pacific
Murder on the Orient Express (2017)
The Fugitive (1993)
Dunkirk

I'm pretty sure this is accurate but let me know if I missed something. More than I thought once I put them all on one list. There's also likely more than what I found via open-source reporting (Warner alone says they have 20 titles in the can as of the middle of last year).

That said, it doesn't mean these were all actually finished in 8K and that there's a file on the shelf ready for distro. Big difference.

Like most people I'm more excited about the 4K refinement than the introduction of 8K (even though I have an 8K display I watch daily). Cool info though...there was a couple titles I didn't realize were 8K scans.

Thanks for the compliment, @AlanG! Yeah, drop shipping is definitely possible, but I just want to make sure folks understand it might come with extra costs because of interstate commerce and sale tax rules. I wish every brand freely drop shipped and let the dealer manage the tax situation!

Just realizing your location is in MA. I work for a company in Natick and lived in Needham/Wellesley for ~5 years a while back. I should stop by your place sometime when I'm traveling out there.
