Hey all, which are the all the special editions of films that are available on 4K disc but only HD or not at all on Kaleidescape?

I've known about The Martian, that the Extended Edition is a separate HD SKU, but also just found out that the Avatar Collector's Edition only includes the Collector's Extended Edition in HD as an extra. I'm ripping the 4K disc right now. AFAIK, the director's cut of Amadeus is HD on both formats. Thankfully, Alien, Aliens, The Abyss, the LotR trilogy, Kingdom of Heaven, and now Star Trek: The Motion Picture all have theirs on K, so most of the essentials are there. But the ones that aren't seem odd, because K evidently has distribution in place for the standard/theatrical cuts, so their special editions shouldn't be blocked by the typical licensing arrangements that create most 4K disc to Kaleidescape HD catalog discrepancies.

Here's my list of 4K HDR Special Edition movies on disc that are just HD or not available at all on K:

Avatar: Extended Collector's Edition 4K HDR
Gladiator: Extended Edition 4K HDR
The Martian: Extended Edition 4K HDR
Midsommar: Director's Cut 4K HDR

It's admittedly a short list, but I'm largely focused on my personal core movies on K. Are there any others that you're aware of?

Did someone mention missing cuts and 4K upgrades??? I’m feeling dizzy… so much data… where are my spreadsheets? I need my spreadsheets! I’ll be back…. :)

Below is a list of alternate cuts that are missing in 4K (missing HD cuts are not listed). As a free bonus, you get my commentary on each missing title because I have feelings about their absence. :)

Almost Famous Theatrical Cut 4K: The 4K version on K is the "Bootleg Cut" although it's not labeled as such. Can anyone confirm which HD version is included? (It is not uncommon to have unlabeled different cuts in HD and 4K on K.)

Apocalypse Now Theatrical Cut 4K: K only has The Final Cut in 4K. This is OUTRAGEOUS and I can't believe this is still the state of things. Why is it in the AFI Top 100 list, K? The Final Cut didn't win any awards, K. It's not considered a critical part of film history, K. Do better, K.

Apocalypse Now Redux 4K: This should also be in 4K, like it is on EVERY other digital store. I get it, three cuts in 4K? Yes. It's good enough for Close Encounters, it's good enough for Apocalypse Now.

(Apocalypse Now) Hearts of Darkness 4K: Bundling this in with the missing Apocalypse Now cuts. This "mother of all extras" is also available in 4K digitally but not on the K store.

Black Hawk Down Extended Cut 4K: Missing on K, available as an Extra on other digital stores.

Doctor Sleep Director's Cut 4K: This is at the top of my "Missed Opportunities" list for K. There has never been a 4K UHD Blu-ray release of this (clearly superior) version of the movie, but there WAS a digital 4K release available that COULD have appeared on K, giving K an exclusive unavailable in disc quality anywhere (ever). Unfortunately, I don't believe this is available for licensing anymore so K lost out and so did we.

The Doors Theatrical/"Preferred" Cut 4K: Lionsgate recently updated The Doors with a new 4K remaster that is receiving a lot of criticism for its new color-grading. While K has the previously (and still) available 4K version of The Final Cut, Stone now claims the Theatrical Cut is his "preferred" cut and is now available digitally in 4K. (K has the Theatrical Cut available in HD, again not labeled as such.)

The Exorcist Director's Cut 4K: When this title saw dual 4K HDR releases from Warner, K not only opted to get the Theatrical Cut only but did so in SDR only. Ugh.

Fall Guy Extended Cut 4K: Upon initial release all digital stores were provided with The Extended Cut in HD. Upon the release of the 4K UHD Blu-ray, stores were able to upgrade this cut to 4K. K has not done so.

Friday the 13th Theatrical Cut 4K: Although I'm an alternate cut fanatic, I have my limits. When a cut exists ONLY because of time-sensitive rulings from the MPAA, and the only differences are seconds of blood, nudity, swearing, etc., then I tend to favor letting the censored version fall to history.

Gladiator Extended Cut 4K: I was seriously hoping that this one would show up before Gladiator II's theatrical and then digital releases. Alas, disappointment found me and I had to break out a disc for a pre-sequel viewing.

Leon: The Professional Extended Cut 4K: "But this is there, I saw it!" Yeah, but it's missing HDR on The Extended Cut. K may have forgotten, but I haven't.

The Martian Extended Cut 4K: One of K's highest profile missing 4K upgrades. I think we were all hoping K would get this upgrade to address this title's Strato HD incompatibility, but unfortunately they simply waited until the tools caught up. Hopefully we'll see this someday.

Midsommar Director's Cut 4K: The disc is exclusive to A24's website, but the digital version is readily available... on every digital store but K.

A Nightmare on Elm Street Theatrical/Extended Cut 4K: "But neither of these are on K?" Correct. That's a crime. K should sit in the corner and think about this... A LOT. This is mostly here so I can again say I don't care about the theatrical cut on this title which was created purely to appease censors at the time.

The Outsiders Theatrical Cut 4K: The subject of another of Coppola's constant revisions, the original Theatrical Cut is the one that won all the awards and it deserves to be present next to the revised "Complete Novel."

Rambo IV Extended Cut 4K: Ok, this is prospective. The extended cut of this movie was previously digitally available on Amazon Prime Video in HD as well as on 4K UHD Blu-ray. Lionsgate is releasing a new 4K boxset in a few weeks and hopefully this will be accompanied by new digital 4K releases of all cuts.

Rambo V Extended Cut 4K: See above.

Rocky Balboa Director's Cut 4K: Another "missed opportunity" highlight. For the 4K UHD Blu-ray, BOTH full cuts of the movie were crammed onto a single disc (no seamless branching) affecting the available bitrate and quality of the title. This movie was a real opportunity for K to show off what they could do without that physical limitation. Further, K had received the alternate cut of Rocky IV and so there was an expectation that they might receive this title. Instead, the Rocky Collection on K is limited compared to all other digital stores.

Rudy Extended Cut 4K: This extended cut with a new 8 minute sequence was released both physically and digitally, but K opted to get only the Theatrical Cut. And, much like The Exorcist, did so in SDR only.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan Theatrical Cut 4K: Khan?!?! Khan is missing? Yup, only the Director's Cut in 4K for K. Want to watch the Theatrical Cut in the highest quality? Go get the disc or buy from another digital store.

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country Director's Cut 4K: Yup, another Star Trek title missing its 4K release on K! Theatrical Cut only for you!

Stripes Extended Cut 4K: K has the Theatrical Cut in 4K and the Extended Cut in HD (not labeled as such). But, the Extended Cut is also available in 4K digitally at other digital stores.

Did I miss any? Let me know what I should add...

Several of these cuts are ones I want to have on K. Martian Extended is one that continues to bite me in the arse...its my wifes favorite movie and favorite cut. Rudy and the Treks being mine. If its a special edition of a favorite movie...i told the wife she has to use disc or Zidoo or stream....

I realize many may look at my list and not care or think only one or two titles should be added. Personally? I believe K should get ALL of them. Yup, even ones I'm not personally interested in. Although it looks like a lot, when you get into details there's roughly 15 additions. K has been getting 4K titles for 10 years, so that's an additional 1.5 titles per year. That isn't a big ask. Again I fall back on trusting the studios: If the studio sees value in releasing more than one cut, follow their lead and get more than one cut.

To be fair to K, they've been getting better at managing alternate cuts. The 40 Year-Old Virgin and American Pie got both of their cuts in 4K recently. So did Lethal Weapon. Nosferatu got its Director's Cut initially in 4K SDR and later upgraded to 4K HDR. A Star is Born has two 4K cuts. After much hand-wringing K finally added the Special Editions of The Abyss and Aliens. And, of course, we all know that Star Trek: The Motion Picture Director's Cut finally appeared on K. So, all credit to K for these. BUT, that doesn't mean that K shouldn't be going back and plugging some of these holes.

We may soon see another test of K's interest in alternate cuts with Lionsgate's pending release of the Rambo series in 4K. The disc set will include audio/video corrections to all titles and easy access to the 4K alternate cuts (generally available overseas). Will Lionsgate update the digital files? Will the alt cuts be made available for digital sale for the first time? If so, will K get them???

I guess my question is ...if The Martian Extended Cut is available on something like Fandango....then who is to blame for it not being on K....K themselves or the studio? If its only available on some...again is that studio decision or failure on whichever platform(s) to get license? I understand there are cases where a particualr cut of something is not available anywhere digitally...then that is clearly on the studio.

In the end to me K is a niche product...an expensive one at that....seems logical that niche customers with interest in alternate editions of titles they collect would look toward K....K should be catering to them when possible.

I really would like to know how much of what K is lacking could be fixed if K made the effort...how much is out of their control.

Oh, and to add insult to injury....I own The Martian on K.....when I browse it shows The Extended version...only in HD, no ATMOS which on its poster indicates I own in 4k.....but wants met o pay $17 for it.

This is incredible. I'm so glad I asked and so glad you replied, and expanded the scope to movies for which K has the special edition but not the theatrical cut in 4K. That's really the crux of the question, what do I think I have all the 4K versions of in Kaleidescape but actually don't have on K, but do have in my crates of discs.

From your list, I already have Almost Famous TC, The Exorcist DC, Gladiator EC, Leon: The Professional EC, The Martian EC, and Midsommar DC ripped to my Plex.

I did not have Apocalypse Now TC or Redux, Star Trek II TC, or Star Trek VI DC, which are all core movies for me that I would want all versions of in 4K. I'm ripping Star Trek II and VI now, and found that my Steelbook of Apocalypse Now only has the Final Cut in 4K. I've ordered the original Apocalypse Now 4K box set from eBay. According to Amazon I did once own it, but had sold it or given it away. Never again!

I'm generally driving in the theater, so it's all seamless to my family. I just need to remember what's where. I've set up collections and playlists in Plex to help me track discrepancies.

It's all K. As a general rule digital rights are broad and non-exclusive. Theoretically every movie can be on every digital store. This is certainly true of major titles, but it's when you get into more obscure titles that you see more diversity of availability. Don't see a movie/cut anywhere? It's the studio. See it on Apple, Amazon, Google, and Fandango but not K? K didn't license it.

Studios can complicate alternate cuts for a store like K. Sometimes they're Extras, so K basically has to license the extras package and do all of the work of another title without additional sales. Sometimes they're separate listings so K has to acquire two different licenses and hope sales justify the effort. Finally, there's weird situations where they appear differently in different stores. Example: Black Hawk Down Extended Cut is listed as a separate purchase on Fandango-at-Home (Vudu) while it's completely unadvertised but included as an Extra on Apple's TV App (iTunes).

Basically things come down to K's limited resources and priorities, and that's when we all play armchair quarterback.

Here's a new collection I made on my Plex server, so I can track what important versions K is missing in 4K. I ripped the Star Trek movies today and the Avatar cuts last night, and added them. In general, I do prefer the theatrical cuts, but I also like to watch their special editions for a different take every now and then. And in the case of The Martian and The Abyss, I only watch the special editions!

Oh, but see, now you've got that nice collection already built and movies ripped to it... but only for 4K cuts.* I mean, K's also missing a bunch of HD alternate cuts. And then there's the ones that are only available on disc. And are we going to completely ignore the cuts that haven't seen circulation since DVDs??? I mean, you're just never going to have the extended cut of Pretty Woman on that server? Or Ace Ventura? Or TOMBSTONE???

:)

P.S. It should also be noted that my list of 4K cuts above is for cuts available digitally. There are additional 4K cuts of films that are on K that are not available digitally and only on disc. You already have examples of these in the Avatar extended editions. So, kinda gotta get the 4K disc exclusive cuts too, right? Deadpool 2 Super Duper Cut is 4K on disc but Once Upon a Deadpool is only HD. Logan Noir is available in 4K. Parasite & Nightmare Alley both have B&W versions available in 4K on disc. Oh my this sure is a slippery slope...

Hah! It sure is! Thanks for flagging all those, I checked to see my copy of Parasite, and it's B&W version is only BD. Mine is an import, so it's possible that another version includes that 4K version.

In my personal case, I'm not a big fan of B&W versions of color films, so I don't think I'l lbe hunting down that 4K. Plus, not a big fan of comic-book movies either.

But on the subject of extended cuts we haven't seen since SD, I'd very much like the 4-hour Dances of Wolves I have on Laserdisc to appear in 4K at some point. Maybe it will be included with the 4K UHD that Arrow Video is finger-crossed working on!
