Shuttling Strato-K between Stand-alone and System

Curious as to wether adding Strato-K immediately deletes stored local content, or just bypasses it when connected as part of a networked system with Terra access.

I couldn't resist downloading a handful of titles in stand-alone. If I connect it to the Terra and then disconnect to use as stand-alone, again, would it be starting from scratch?

Also, new fear unlocked. Version FOMO. Good luck to mixed display households!

Thankfully, it seems you can download 4K-Cinematic to a Terra without a Strato-K connected.

Now to do storage math gymnastics.

When you add a Terra server to the Strato-K the movies stored on the K are deleted, and the storage function is disabled. You would need to re-download those deleted movies to the grouped Terra server. If you subsequently ungroup the K from the Terra and return it to Standalone mode, the storage capability is restored, and you would need to download / re-download movies.

As Jim points out above, the content downloaded to a Strato K operating in standalone mode is deleted once you group the player with a Terra.
Will the K work with a Terra and a Strato s at the same time?
It will but only as long as the Terra is online and on the same network as the Strato K. The Strato K will be able to play content that is stored on the filesystem of the Terra or the Strato S (keeping in mind the HD-content compatibility limitations). However, if the Terra is powered down or disconnected from the network, the Strato K will drop into a lobby screen and will not be usable until either the Terra comes back online or the Strato K is reset back into standalone mode.

What do you mean by HD content limitations? Right now my Stratos is full, and I don’t plan on using the Stratos to play content. I just need it to store the movies that are already on it and allow the K to play the movies stored on the Stratos and the Terra. The K plays HD and standard content, right?

What do you mean by HD content limitations?
Some movies and TV shows cannot be played back on certain Kaleidescape players, for technical reasons. In this case, Dolby Vision-capable Strato players (Strato V, E, and K) cannot play the legacy HD format that was used on earlier players such as your Strato S. Updated versions compatible with all Strato players are available for most titles, and more will come over time.

You can check to see which -- if any -- titles in your library may be affected by looking at the HD Compatibility report for your system(s) on the web version of the store:
(Yes, I know the URL says "strato_v_compatibility". It applies to Strato E, M, and K as well).

I swear I asked this and others have asked this before about Strato E/V/K couldn't play content from the S.

Well burn my biscuits, if you have a Terra, the S can be used with the E/V/K. Well, that may change things for me.

Admittedly, I have glossed over a few players since the Strato-C. So the HD movies that I have currently on a Terra, won't play on the strato-K unless they are the newly updated versions, and the Strato-K is needed to play 4K-Cinematic content.

The storage math gymnastics intensify.

If I connected a Strato-C and Strato-K to the same theater system, would the available movies look different from the menu? Or would you find out it wasn't available after selecting it - for example, consider the 'insert disc' titles that are catalogued but not purchased from the store.

So the HD movies that I have currently on a Terra, won't play on the strato-K unless they are the newly updated versions
The conversion process for our HD content began a number of years ago (a bit before the introduction of the Strato V) so any HD content you downloaded after that will already be compatible with the new Stratos (including Strato K). And if you've been downloading the updated versions as they became available over the years, there would be little to no impact to your current storage since the new HD format is backward compatible with older Stratos. No need to keep two HD versions for Strato C and Strato K.

So I'm confused here the above implies that a Strato V can playback stored movies from a Strato S.
I thought that wasn't possible. Great if it can

No need for implications or inferences. I'll state it definitively:
Strato K (and V, E, or M) can play content from any server that is part of the system including Terra, Terra Prime, Strato w/Storage, Strato S, and Alto. However, the following caveats/limitations apply:
  • At least 1 Terra/Terra Prime must be part of the system and must be online on the same network as the rest of the system. If the Terra goes offline, so does the Strato K until the Terra comes back online.
  • The content cannot be cataloged discs residing in a disc vault (Strato K can't play discs directly; we'll leave Co-Star out of the discussion for the sake of simplicity).
  • The HD content must be the newer HD format.

What was the issue with the HD content? What changed in the format or hardware? Just curious as this was all before I got into KScape.
