Problem playing back DVD / Blu-ray content from Premiere system

If you replace a single drive with a larger drive, you don’t gain any additional storage, because the extra space can’t be parity protected in the RAID. If you replace a second drive with the same size larger drive, you will then gain extra space. For example, starting with a 1U server and four 4TB drives, if you replaced two drives with 6TB drives, you’d gain a total of 2TB.

Thanks for the clarification Mike.
I'll be replacing another in the near future, so I will gain some space.

Quick question: 1U or 3U? On a 3U, you actually have to replace three drives before you gain storage. This is because the first becomes the new hot spare.

Flite already has a few 6TB drives within the same server. I assumed two of those were assigned parity and spare. Two of the smaller drives failed and now replaced by 6TB drives. Will there be still unallocated partitions in the new drives?

3U.
The one I just installed has taken over the hot spare role.

Ah, I didn't know there were already 6TB drives in the chassis. If there were at least two 6TB drives in the chassis before, and if the drives that failed were both 4TB drives, then yes, there should be an additional 4TB of capacity on the system once the new drives are installed!
