OLED vs Projector opinions

Kris came to my house last July to calibrate my 790R. I was consulting with him about the possibility of a projector upgrade with the caveat that in 3 years I plan on buying land, custom building a house, and building out a large theater room. Based on my current room dimensions and a 92" screen, he recommended that a TV would yield a better picture for less money. Then I should look for a new projector when I build out the larger theater room.

With that being stated, I became the owner of a new 98" Samsung QN90A and I officially became a projector defector.

I'm pleasantly pleased and am STILL enjoying the image. Yet sometimes I do feel bad about switching over to a TV. Somehow my 5 year old and 8 year old claimed it for their Mario Kart and AstroBot escapades. Lol

I know how you feel, I have no regrets switching to the oled, as I was limited to the space I had for a larger screen and wasn’t willing to give up real-estate for my audio system.

RAGJr, I haven’t unboxed them yet, I just got the seats in the room today. I also have a few more components to get in the racks. I also received my Strato K today and I’am very excited to get it installed

However, I've long wanted to replace this with a large (~100") TV paired with a larger retractable screen (135"-145") for the projector. I'll likely need a processor with the new screen and had been planning on a used Lumagen. Depending upon the TV and Screen selected the budget was going to be stretched as-is, but the Strato K hitting has really shaken things up.

I'm eager to hear feedback on JVC Projector/LG OLED/Lumagen RP setups and whether there's benefit from the new player. I was hoping to sneak in a large used Terra but that goes away if a more advanced processor is needed.

A Lumagen ArtisAN 8K with a JVC projector and Strato K could give you a pathway ready for 8K. It won’t be cheap, but now is the time to think long term.

The issue I have with the Artisan is the price. I need a single input/output and my only use cases are repositioning the image and tone mapping. I will likely never use any other function of a Lumagen/MadVR. No interpolating, smoothing, non-linear stretch, subtitle management, etc. Tone map. Put the image at the "bottom" of the frame. Frankly, the image management could be done less elegantly with lens memory. So, considering you need to pay for the software unlocks we're looking at $13K for tone mapping? I'd need someone to look at what a used Radiance Pro can do and tell me the difference is worth $10K.

For 8k there are too many hoops to run through with a projector. I think I will simplify the 8k process by grabbing one of the near extinct Samsung 85-98” “native 8K” displays for my game room/ secondary viewing area.

I have a JVC NZ800 which is 8k eshift capable, plus an MK3 on order. But I don’t believe there is a native 8k projector that exists. But I could be wrong

Given that I currently have a 135 screen...and no way I can ever see myself going smaller....projection is it... Maybe price of video walls will come down in what remains of my lifetime.

For what it is worth, I just had an Envy Core MK2 installed, and have loved it. I felt the same way about only being interested in auto-aspect ratio and tone-mapping, was mainly tired of the lens shifting on the JVC projector. I have been super happy with the Envy so far, and it was a lot cheaper than the Artisan (and actually available). I have ended up using non-linear stretch for my scope screen, as it is actually much better than I thought it would be.

I don't have anything to compare the Envy to, and I think both Lumagen and MadVR are great products. The main thing is having a dealer that is knowledgeable enough to set them up correctly and be available for questions afterwards. I was able to find a reputable MadVR dealer in my area, and decided to go that route, no regrets so far.

The Samsung 85-98 8K flatpanel can be a good move. I have an 85” 8K Sony Z9K in a secondary area that I can experiment with at some point.

I think you might be sitting pretty with a JVC NZ800 + MadVR EE MK3 though. Although native 4K (4096 x 2160), it can accept an HDMI 2.1 8K/60p input (7680 x 4320p 60/ 50/ 30/25 /24) at up to 48Gbps and display 8192 x 4320 with e-shiftX. I believe it handles up to 12-bit and 4:4:4 4K, although 8K SDR from K-scape will be 4:2:0 and 10-bit, so you should be good there too.

Love that Z9K. I always regret sleeping through that one. Yeah I’m gonna be doing some extensive test drives once the Envy MK3 arrives. You make some very compelling points.

Yup, excellent display, this is one of the displays we used when K came to my place to demo the Strato-K, the 8K content we viewed was incredible.

Great to hear your positive experience with 8K. The only downside with the Z9K is that the 8K capable HDMI input (#4) won’t support DV at all. Not that DV support is really necessary.
