Movies on Sale...

Depends on how soon you want to watch it and how confident you are it will drop on K right away. Lots to consider, like what studio is doing the 4K and how's their track record with releasing on K.

For a title that's on the horizon, I'd probably wait. When I think about what I've bought that has been upgraded (which is a sample size of probably 5), if my memory serves me correct, I've typically purchased the HD version for $15, and when the UHD version drops it sells for $20-25 with an upgrade for $10. So basically a wash or an extra $5.

I tend to buy films either 1) when I want to watch them, or 2) when they go on sale. I'm attempting to get out of the habit of buying just to have.

If you're itching to watch The Departed, I'd probably take advantage of the sale now. If you just want to own it, I'd wait until it drops in 4K, and maybe even wait for a sale after that.
Really appreciate the detailed information. Really helpful, thanks a ton!!

I'm in the same boat. One thing that helped is that I made a Collection category of "Never Watched" and put all of the movies I've never watched in there. (Not just the ones I haven't watched on Kscape - since those appear in the New category. These are movies I've never seen ever.) I figure that aside from a handful of new movies that I want to watch when they're relatively new, I should make some headway into my backlog before adding more.
The New category doesn't necessarily work for folks cycling content through smaller servers, since it populates that based on recent downloads. I just added 48TB last week, so at least now that would work for me. Good idea for the never watched category. Kinda wish K would build that into the OS, similar to PLEX and other platforms.

Interesting to note with those movies "buy the HD version now and wait for 4K later" is that Argylle just appeared as "Watch Now in HD with a 4K pre-order included" message.

For your never watched content, I suggest using the Watch Soon collection. Movies added there will automatically be removed after you watch them (vs. having to manually remove them from a manually curated "Never Watched" collection).

This will likely become more common. I remember several years back VUDU did a similar promotion through WalMart, where you pre-ordered/bought the title on VUDU and got HD, and later when the disc was released they shipped you a copy through WalMart and the 4K version was added to VUDU.

I would assume we'll see more experimentation from studios on promotions like this, when we look at all the different streaming platforms and their exclusivity windows. AppleTV+ has been promoting Argylle for several months now. It's a way studios can still offer exclusive windows without completely locking out other platforms.

I really don´t see the point in doing a first screening with mediocre quality and then do it again when the improved version is available.
At least not for people with a tight schedule who are happy to find the time to watch a movie at all (and not multiple times)...

For those that may know, for movies like "The Departed" that are on sale in HD but are getting a 4K release version soon (likely to be added to Kscape in 4K too soon), is it better to purchase these kind of movies ahead of the 4K release, or after for better pricing?
Waiting is almost always better. At one point, you could purchase a blu-ray with free shipping and buy at the D2D price and still come out ahead from the regular K-Store pricing. I've been 'caught' a few times finally giving in on a catalog HD title that re-appeard in 4K later.

Let's face it, unless you are going to watch the movie RIGHT NOW (or 5-20 mins :), wait or even rent it.

Full disclosure. I am not very disciplined at following this advice. Good luck.

At the rate new titles appear, I am not sure when I will find the time to revisit catalog favorites.

I think it’s setup specific but agree for the most part. If you are using with a video processor like a MadVR and can apply 3DLUT to HD then it’s splitting hairs sometimes unless you just have to have HDR.

Then there are the outliers where the HDR isn’t considered as good as the UHD (Goodfellas I think?) or HD (Bourne films 1-3 and aliens I think come to mind as the ones usually debated).

At the end of the day, if it’s a great movie and you own on BD, I’ve def pulled the trigger for $3 and you usually can’t go wrong IMO…..

Too much family pressure on getting that one, but got to hold off on Wonka!
It was with eyes open but we bought both of those to watch before Oscars night. Managed to hang on for the Aquaman offer. I still think anything around $19.99, $24.99 for a new movie is fair enough. The $34.99 price just makes me want to dig my heels in unless it is for guests which Barbie and Tonka were. I just checked and since the server(s) first arrived I think the movies average out at around $11.61 and so looking at it that way helps me feel better :) That obviously includes D2Ds too.

Warner typically are $40 (crazy and really out of alignment with other major studios), then drop $5 after a month or so, then drop $20 a bit after they hit Streaming. I would buy on day 1 for $25 for sure…..
