Movies on Sale...

Anyone already have these titles on K? If so, would you please test the 4K SDR versions and report back? It would be interesting to see what others think about the 4K HDR vs. SDR comparison. There's a comparison between Blu-ray and 4K on YouTube and I actually thought the 4K HDR versions on that video look pretty bad as well.
Not really going to be an accurate way to compare though, by looking at YouTube videos that is. I’m surprised you think it’s bad as everything I’ve read online says they are a big improvement over the Blu-rays specifically citing that DV/HDR is the main improvement. I’ve not watched my UHD copy yet to specifically comment on the films though.

I think the big issue with HDR is that it’s very dependant on the capabilities of your display and/or DTM solution as to how good the end result is. Literally the main reason I got a Lumagen so I don’t have to think about it and I definitely notice the increased dynamic range of HDR content, despite the fact I think the contrast might actually be worse or at least the blacks aren’t quite as good, as it’s running in a brighter laser mode, so maybe it’s the same contrast but shifted up to allow for brighter highlights.

The Lumagen is converting HDR to SDR, or you’re letting the HDR through ?

I watch HDR/DV titles all the time and the vast majority look excellent. That’s not the case for the Back to the Future trilogy IMHO. I’ve only watched them via streaming though. There are actually some 4K HDR titles that look better in SDR.

Lumagen DTM to get HDR into the SDR2020 container and then HDR flag on so the JVC automatically goes into the HDR picture mode but with its own DTM and colour/gamma profiles off and done in the Lumagen.

I’ve also got an OLED but I don’t do any real watching on that anymore because 65” is too small and the inbuilt soundbar doesn’t have the same impact either but I do compare sometimes just to see how they look on a TV.

Interesting, maybe the streaming version is bad or there is some dodgy meta-data. What exactly did you feel was wrong and I’ll have a look? I don’t have DV on the OLED but I’ll see what it does with standard HDR10 in that and then the DTM version on the projector as it does often look better on the projector whereas the TV can sometimes look too dark especially with streaming from the firestick.

It didnt look clear and detailed, the way other 4K titles look. It just may be the source material is like that? Here are the screen comparisons from YouTube:

Ok had a quick check and it definitely looks nothing like that on my projector, I noticed the screenshots are taken by the guy from another website and aren’t actually representative of anything they have seen. On top of that the photos aren’t HDR but converted to SDR which is why they are so dim.

For reference here’s a shot of the car manure directly from my screen and pretty representative of the brightness, colours aren’t quite right for some reason my iPhone makes the sunlight look really yellow. It also adds noise to the picture from some kind of low light sharpening as my room is completely blacked out fabric, the camera also can’t capture the whole dynamic range but as you can see it has a lot more pop than either of their screenshots and mine is calibrated with a Lumagen and only ~75nits with the filter on my 145” AT screen so not crazy bright.

I’ll check it on the OLED as well, I’ve got an OLED form 2018 and a more modern QD OLED monitor so I’ll see what those look like but I imagine it will still look great even without DTM on those since they can go much brighter. Screenshot is just for a comparison to theirs because ultimately the brightness of your screen is going to be different to what I’m looking at on my phone.

Thanks, appreciate it. I have an OLED and watched them on Apple TV so there would be much less video/audio compression on the K versions. I may end up purchasing just for the uncompressed audio alone (since the cost is so reasonable) with no expectations of a better picture. It may just be that my expectations were higher than were delivered since there are quite a few of the older titles that looked far better than these did.

Ok I’ve tested on both my OLED’s now, I’m sure my Panasonic is crushing blacks, some scenes look too dark and I’ve been thinking that for a while now with most HDR stuff. The QD OLED on the other hand looked pretty much the same as the projector ignoring the infinite contrast differences.

It’s certainly not the sharpest or most flashy looking 4K film though.

App says Inside Out 2 flash sale, but I’m seeing $24.99. Is that the sale price? I figured it would be $14.99 like usual flash sales.
I didn’t see it when I looked earlier but I see it’s on the banner not in any of the sales section and no reduced price. Maybe it hasn’t updated yet or it’s gone on early?

I am ready and waiting though! I’ve picked up Beetlejuice and Ghostbusters Frozen Empire so I can’t complain!

Frozen 1 & 2 are listed at $14.99 each. However, i noticed that the set is priced at $34.99. I always thought the sets were more attractively priced.
