Linus Tech tips talks about Kaleidescape

Man, it's been several weeks since he talked about it on the WANG show. He introduced KS as "a secret Netflix for billionaires". I'm about as far from a billionaire as possible, while still having a home, and I joined the club in the time since he said that...

I just watch a few of the clips on YouTube. I clicked this one expecting to hear about something new and actually SECRET; turns out it was some I'd known about for a decade or two.

It's funny, because both Luke and Linus could easily afford a player and a server.

I thought it was a pretty fair video.

I think they missed on the pricing of movies a fair bit. Missed talking about sales and D2D. Also turned the content sets into a negative because of the disconnect with the on-screen UI.

I loved that they called out the issues with TV Shows and how the UI handles them. Also, just in general, calling out the dated look and feel of the on-screen UI. I wish they could bring the website's look and feel to the on-screen UI soon. I love browsing on the website and won't even attempt to shop on the store on the player.

No scrubbing hit home.
Facts. And no taps/skips forward. I’ve taken to watching 4K TV shows on K. The quality is fantastic but the experience is rough. Opening credits on my Apple TV: Either a “Skip” button appears or it’s 2-3 taps to the right and instantly watching. K? Scan forward, play, no further, now play. Each press and reaction feels sluggish and it strips “premium” right off the experience. But, the picture/sound are still worth it.

Regardless of availability, I always figured I’d buy the few TV series that do come out on disc on disc. I only bought Starfleep Academy because the best physical format is going to be regular Blu-ray

The issue with skipping intros (Starfleet Academy’s is super long and boring!) can be solved by putting chapters at the right spots though.

Yeah, wasn't it Linus that bought the $30K Hisense RGB TV that I recall when seeing another of his videos?

I think his current TV is some LED thingy from China. It was $20K. I think they cover that in this video, albeit briefly. I'm not sure I'd go Kaleidescape before my screen was OLED, projector (plus Lumagen or MadVR) or one of those pro-level video wall things...

He has some sometimes odd dogmas about what's "worth the money" and what isn't. In the WAN clip he says HELL NO to whether it's worth it or not, but he's a bit less dogmatic about that point in this video. Yet he could buy a K player and the biggest server easy, and he is clearly able to appreciate the improvement compared to UHD Blu-ray that 4K Cinema delivers. But he's never spend the money 🤷‍♂️

I don’t have MadVR or Lumagen….. am I doing something wrong?
