KScape 4K Cinematic Rollout Clunky

I have to say, this rollout of 4K Cinematic content has been clunky, to say the least. At first they rolled out 4K Cinematic Dolby Vision, upgraded all my movies, and then they started quietly uploading the 4K Cinematic HDR10 versions, which are better for projectors. Then, there's no way to select 4K Cinematic HDR10 as the default file type to download, so I have to manually select the file type every time I buy a movie. I contacted tech support and they said that they built in the preference, but my server still won't download HDR10 automatically. They said they are not sure why its not working. Also, there's no way to mass replace file versions, so I'm having to go through my whole collection, movie by movie, download the correct one, then go to the device menu and manually delete each incorrect format (yes, I know you can mass delete). Not really posting this to bitch and moan, more to offer feedback if there are any KScape techs/mgrs in this group. Thanks!

Honestly, I might hold off before simply declaring that HDR10 versions are "better for projectors". I don't know that anyone can make this declaration right now as 26.1.1 is just rolling out. (Of course you may be able to if you're already on 26.1.1 and have done the comparisons yourself.) Theoretically, with a fully functional and correct DV to HDR player-level conversion and the (nearly) 12-bit color capabilities of DV being downscaled combined with other items in your chain, it's quite possible that 4KC DV is the preferred version (this is certainly what K had in mind when they originally designed the Strato K and 4K Cinematic).

Anyway, I'm waiting to hear recommendations from some of the prominent voices on the forum before triggering mass downloads/replacements.

We’re living through transition to a new standard — 4KC! Pretty exciting. Reminds me of the introduction of DV. I appreciate the early audible by K-scape to offer 4KC-DV, HDR10, and SDR, when possible.

The OP’s gripes about not being able to set a preference or mass update are totally valid. There’s also been some frustration with the logic of what movies migrate to 4KC first. We’ll get there though. Then I’ll be ready to do it all over again for 8K 😁

If what Dolby says is true about the ICP colorspace (which is what KScape uses since they get Profile 5 Dolby Vision mezzanines), then the decoded Dolby Vision files are nearly 12 bits compared to 10 bit HDR10 files. 12 bit 4:2:2 is in some ways better than 10 bit 4:4:4 (not all C4k HDR10 files will be 4:4:4, some will also be only 4:2:2 - it depends on what the studio gives them) and 12 bit data also eliminates visible banding in HDR content.

There are ways of sending Dolby Vision to a non Dolby Vision display through EDID spoofing devices.

Even if you send 12 bit 4:2:2 video to a display that can only internally handle 10 bit processing, the image still benefits in some ways from the oversampling of 12 bits dithered to 10 bits.
