Kaleidescape Soon Only Choice for Uncompressed Content

Neither KS nor UHD Blu-ray are uncompressed.

As the larger manufacturers of Blu-ray players are dropping the formats, several smaller brands are taking a stab at it, and there's still Panasonic, at least for a while yet.

We're seeing the bifurcation of the market as it continues to contract. Want to spend $2,000-$12,000 for a disc player? Magnetar has what you need. At the other end of the market? Chinese manufacturers are stepping in with generic looking but decently feature-rich (and region-free) products. "But those are several hundred!" I hear you say, but sadly today's $300 player is yesterday's $99 player. Regardless, there's literally hundreds of millions of disc players in the world and sadly the number of people buying new ones is disappearing.

Where do you see collectors landing?

Short-term/long-term? Old folks have their players and are going to ride their Oppos and Pannys into the sunset on $75 4K UHD Blu-rays. Young folks on that retro vibe are going to grab DVDs and Players from Goodwill and enjoy that sweet SD goodness with awesome packaging, collectibles, animated menus, and special features. 4K UHD Blu-ray will last many more years; DVDs will last forever.

Collectors' role in the shrinking physical media market will continue to increase as parents buying cheap DVDs for their kids continue to migrate to digital and streaming before the entire physical thing largely sputters out. :(

Yes, I've heard this before. I'm talking about the least compressed you can get for home viewing.

I'm glad I kept some extra 4K BD players in the closet just in case. There are still quite a few boutique shops that release 4K titles only on disc.

You seriously think UHD Blu-rays will become that expensive?!
I am already routinely paying those prices for various steelbooks, collector’s editions, and foreign titles. 4K revenue is the single bright spot in the otherwise bleak physical market and although volumes are still going down the lesson is to charge as much as possible. $300 for a limited 4K set of The Odyssey? Expect to see more of that in the future. Fewer buyers but higher prices. That’s the ride we’re on until it’s over. (Universal probably could have charged $70 for the Steelbook without affecting orders.)

I'll have to see $75 standard edition UHD Blu-rays before I believe it.
Oh, I don’t think every “disc only” 4K UHD Blu-ray will be $75, I just think it’s going to be those $75 versions that drive/maintain the market. We already see this in boutique sales from companies like Umbrella, Second Sight, Via Vision, Turbine, etc. Sell 1,000 “deluxe” copies at a high price that pays all the bills (licensing, production, restoration, etc,) then drop a mass market disc (still in thousands) that lines the pockets a bit. If those hard-core folks paying the bills disappear, so does studio/boutique interest in discs.
