Hello all, new user

I don’t know if this is the appropriate place, but I just wanted to stop by and say hello. I am in the process of building my very first theater, which I’m very excited about. I figured if I was going to do it, I was going to do it right and get what I really wanted and make this and endgame theater for myself. I was going to go into my dealer and place an order for the Strato V but life kept getting in the way and put my order a couple of weeks out. Well, thank goodness for that because in that timeframe, they announced the Strato K. I received it a little while back, I’ve taken it out of its box, but it’s just been sitting begging to be used. I did also purchase the remote for it as well, but figure I will probably go with something like Control 4.

I’ve never really experienced a good Theater with exception of commercial theaters so I’m pretty excited about this. My daughters are currently four years old and I’m hoping that they can grow up enjoying movies as much as I did.

Please feel free to ask any questions, I would love to get any tips. People may have as far as the build goes or Kaleidescape itself. If anyone is curious about what I’m putting together in the theater, please ask otherwise I kind of just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Dan, I have twin, daughters, and live in the Pacific Northwest. This is my only pic I have on my phone, but here she is and all her glory. Along with my AV10 and other sources with the exception of the Apple TV 4K. If anyone has any recommendations as to other sources, that would be good I’m all ears. I figured with a good 4K disc player, Apple TV streamer, and this I would be covered, but again I’m new with this so I could be absolutely clueless.

Between that disc player, that Kscape, and that streamer, I can't imagine another source you'd need. (Well, okay, maybe a Steam Machine to sit alongside the PS5.)

Oh, yeah, I know I know lol. I’m starting off with a quad of 24” subwoofers in the front, but I already have the plans in my mind too eventually get some for the back of the room. Also, I’m sure that all of the speakers in my bed layer will be more than fine for my size a room, but I somewhat wish I could’ve upgraded to the bigger version at the time of pickup. They cost twice as much though lol and I’m not sure that they would have gained me much as I’m sure the ones I picked out will be more than sufficient. Endgame, for now lol.

I’ve heard good things about the steam machine that recently came out, to be honest I really don’t get much time to play games anymore. I’m hoping that once I have the theater built out that I can slow down in life just a little bit and play. I got a couple games. I’ve been wanting to try out like RoboCop and the remake of resident evil 4.

Thank you, please let me know why it makes you cringe. As in you don’t like the equipment or the fact that I have things stacked on top of it? Don’t worry I did set a microfiber towel between the Panasonic and the AV 10. I got the rack mount for everything, all of it is going to be placed into a 1950s era or possibly 1960s era Stromberg Carlson rack. Thought it was pretty cool with the vintage look, different than the average black rack you see. So once I have everything mounted in the rack there shouldn’t be anything sitting on top of anything else.

I’m considering using it just for a short while upstairs on a 65 inch G4 OLED until I have the room downstairs built, but ultimately for the time being I have a Titan Noir Max projector. If you were referring to the screen, the person I hired to help with the room recommended a motorized Seymour, probably right around 140-145” diagonal 2.40:1. He isn’t a huge fan of the woven screen that comes on those so swap out the material for XY Soundmax 4K. I am going woven as I needed to be acoustically transparent, the towers will be behind the screen.

Welcome Dan. I was also wondering what the video display would look like, and I think the 2.40:1 screen choice is a good one.

On that subject, having had a 2.40:1 screen for almost 10 years, and having dealt with the various frustrations and complexities that using lens zoom, shift and focus introduce, along with problems seeing subtitles when used, I'd strongly recommend considering an external video processor to handle aspect ratio and subtitle management, along with providing state of the art HDR tone mapping. I'm partial to the Envy, and unless you're an avid gamer, needing the lowest possible input lag, the madVR Envy Core MK1 at $5k is an excellent option.

I also think that adding Control4 to the mix is a great idea. I'm using that as well, and it simplifies and automates the theater making it much easier to operate. There is an excellent (free) Control4 driver for madVR that works really well, allowing you to automate pretty much anything.

I'm using a Stewart screen with 2-way motorized masking, which provides automatic masking when paired with the Envy and Control4. Really works well. I think the Seymour may have similar functionality, although I do recall some delays in that area you might want to check out.

First I've heard of Stromberg Carlson. Did a quick google image search and omg! their radios are drop dead gorgeous!

Didn't see any racks, though. Can you point me at one?

You might get some recommendations on getting something like a Zidoo and building a NAS to rip your discs......honestly having gone down that rabbit hole I would advise against it...especially given the current state of storage. Any titles that K may not have or not have in best format...you can get on disc.

Next piece of advice...again based on experience...TREAT YOUR ROOM FIRST.

100% agree. That’s my strategy regarding movie selection. I had my my theater up and running before room treatment arrived. HUGH different even with using a Trinnov.

Same...I had everything (speakers, subs, avr) setup long before considering any room treatment. If I were to do it again...I would make sure room is treated beforehand.

Another suggestion...not sure how old your UBD player is but I went ahead and ordered a 2nd one ..while they are still available and not crazy expensive. I fear players will be harder and harder to find ...and then only at luxury prices....recently saw some model announced for $12k...lol so stupid.
