I usually disparage K's Halloween offerings so I thought I'd take a moment to highlight when they do a good job. With the recent 4K Catalog Upgrade of Army of Darkness, the entire Evil Dead Film franchise is now available in 4K!!! The original trilogy, ending in Army of Darkness, is considered an absolute classic and part of the early horror/comedy mix that has become so popular. The quotable lines in Army of Darkness are immeasurable, and I'll leave it to historians to decide whether Army of Darkness' 4K Upgrade or Lawrence of Arabia's DV Upgrade was the greater addition to cinema on K.

If you're a fan, you should absolutely snatch up all of these titles. If you like 70's, 80's, and 90's horror and wish K would get more of it, pick up these titles! K is doing the good work here and giving us these movies in the best quality. We need to show they can sell! (While the modern titles do well on K, the classic films are low on popularity. Let's fix that!)

The Original Trilogy*

The Evil Dead (1981): (The "original" low budget horror.)
Evil Dead 2 (1987): (Part remake, mostly sequel.)
Army of Darkness (1992): (More essential than Citizen Kane?)

The New Ones*
Evil Dead (2013): (Remake? Reboot? Sequel? Scary and brutal.)
Evil Dead Rise (2023): (The "other" horror sequel now set in a high-rise.)
Evil Dead Burn (2026): (Less "Ha Ha" and more "The Horror!")

The TV Series**
Ash vs Evil Dead* (2015-2018): (No such thing as too much Bruce Campbell.)

*We're unlikely to see movie bundles as the rights split amongst Sony, Lionsgate, and Universal.
**Ash vs. Evil Dead is only available in HD on any format.

Just got Army of Darkness now since it's on sale. I remember really enjoying this film when it came out in theaters. Looking forward to revisiting now in 4K! Will pick up 1 & 2 when they go on sale (maybe for Halloween?).

To really move the needle, we have to buy all of them 🤔 ?

I really enjoyed Army of Darkness, even the guys clearly in the rubber suits!

In terms of the highlighted section, Mr. Campbell also has a great role in Burn Notice which K doesn't have:cry:

The newer ones do fine on popularity. Not stellar, but totally fine. The Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2 are amongst the least popular 4K horror titles and can be pointed to as justification for K's decision to not update titles like A Nightmare on Elm Street.

Was very happy to see army of darkness finally make it to 4K on Kaleidescape!

One caveat though, the entire franchise isn't quite yet 4K HDR on K, the 2013 remake/reboot is only 4K SDR on Kaleidescape, I'd like to see it get HDR/DV and the 5 minute longer Unrated cut, like the Shout Factory disc has.

Thanks for the catch, I've corrected the post. HDR/DV appears to be exclusive to the disc, as does the Extended Cut in 4K. However, the Extended Cut is available digitally in HD and I should have caught that. I'd definitely like to see this added to K.
If you're the same, get those requests in to: movies@kaleidescape.com

(FYI, Evil Dead 2 is 4K HDR but is missing a DV Upgrade. Hopefully if we can get the sales up it'll get more attention.)

Got them all except the series, let's hope it moved the needle a bit ;), still 24 more nights of horror to fill.
