I've just launched a new series on my YouTube channel where I'm talking about music-related content via the Kaleidescape. This will include concert films, musicals, music-related documentaries and biopics, etc. I've got a couple episodes up so far, and planning to release a new episode every other week. So far I've talked about Sinners and the new Stray Kids concert film, and next up will be Stop Making Sense.

Congrats @thrillcat! I'll check them out! I often feel that music is among the most disregarded aspects of film appreciation. All the making-ofs generally focus on the technical aspects, and most film commentary is about plot, sometimes characters, and once in a while about themes (which is what I find meaningful). But I personally also love the visual and auditory storytelling of cinema. Can you present a compelling story without words at all? That's such an important part of the story to me because it works on every level leaning directly into the unique attributes of cinema.

Also, Stop Making Sense is a fantastic subject. I actually met all four of them at the SF Film Festival, at a screening there 25 years ago. I helped Tina Weymouth find her sweater. Fantastic!

A couple more episodes added...these will be posting every other Friday going forward!

can't wait to watch this! Loving this new series of yours.
Blues Brothers still holds up... one of my favorites and was also among my first Kaleidescape watch!
BTW, while I won't necessarily put it up there with Blues Brothers in terms of cultural relvance, if you've never seen Alan Parker's The Commitments, it's also worth a watch. Another early Kaleidescape favorite of mine. Shame there's not been a 4K/Atmos re-release.

(by the way, as you post these on this forum consider putting a furl-link to the movie in the K store, giving members here a one-click way to grab the movie you're reviewing!)

want to know how old I am? I thought this was going to be a concert film by the Stray Cats. 🤦
But I'll check it out so i don't feel so old. Bet my daughter knows and loves them...

Oh we also have The Commitments, love that movie. Actually used to know Eamonn Flynn very well, who was the keyboard/piano/organ player on the music (not in the film, but toured with the band). He was in a couple other San Francisco bands that my bands played shows and promoted events with.

New episode online!

Is 'The Moment' a Concert Movie? Charli XCX in the Front Row Cinema

Also note that The Blues Brothers from a couple weeks ago is currently on sale for $5!

This is a show y'all should watch. SOOO good, just wish the bass was stronger.

hmm... i watched the trailer as well as your review (man, your production values are really becoming outstanding!) , but when it comes to figuring out if I'm going to like this... I don't get it. Do you have to be a fan of that band or that particular sub-genre to enjoy this movie? I've never heard of them or their music, and death metal isn't usually for me. By the looks of it, it's not really my thing. convince me otherwise?

The music is much poppier than one would think by looking at them. Their hooks are off the chart catchy. We're not typically "death metal" fans, but these guys are so good. They aren't even death metal. There's no screaming in this stuff. It's melodic heavy rock more akin to Def Leppard than Megadeth. Fantastic harmony vocals.

They had a song several years ago called Square Hammer that got lots of play on typical hard rock radio. That's when I discovered them. I saw they were coming to where we lived in Iowa and immediately bought tickets - wound up in the very front row. Rebecca had never heard of them, didn't preview them at all, just knew that they were a "super-catchy tongue-in-cheek Satanic theatrical metal band."

After the first song (Rats), she turned to me and was immediately in love with the band. It's still one of our all-time favorite concerts, which is a list that also includes John Mayer, ELO and Michael Franti.

In case you're wondering how "evil" they actually are....this is a shot from that first show:

Oh, and my production skills have been solid for decades now, but I've finally been upgrading some of my gear that helps create a solid visual in a few minutes, rather than digging out a ton of gear from the closet and building it all, setting it up, etc. I was getting lazy due to lack of time, not putting in the effort. This is making it a much quicker, more streamlined process.

thanks, it does sound more compelling than i first thought... will give it a listen first on spotify and maybe just take a shot on the movie.
