F1 movie

An update to the audio track would be exceptional. Has this ever happened for reference titles in the past on K?
I've only seen typical updates to address a/v errors and glitches.
I’m relatively new to K, but I’ve seen numerous updates to video and audio quality come up. I don’t know what triggers them though, I assume studio updates drive it but I also know the K team is sensitive to its users.

I joked with my niece that Apple probably mastered this for playback on iPhones. But I wonder if in this day and age, that’s actually really what happened.

I liked the movie but nothing more then that to be honest.
Seems like everything that happend the last few years in F1 is a bit altered and put in the script, dont know… the cast also… felt a bit underperformend and looking a bit like amateurs.
Then again the video quality was perfect and top notch.
The audio indeed is a problem , you have to crank it up but i also had the feeling the bass was lacking a bit in tightness and control.
Dont know but something wrong maybe?
I had a nice time watching it but dont think i will see it again soon.
After the last couple of new movies maybe K have to look at the sound?

No comparison to my all time favorite F1 movie RUSH (from the time period when the driver was more important than the car).
Enjoyed... but will not be a much of a rewatch unlike RUSH which we watch every year when we attend the Austin Grand Prix.
By the way RUSH is out on 4K ATMOS HDR on Disc but not on K.

Not much below 40hz…

(For the streaming version, from the BEQ forum)

Looks like it’s also not in 4k on Apple, so maybe a streaming vs disc difference?

Yeah it appears to be the case for F1 across the board. Shane Lee reviewed F1 on Apple and he found the audio levels to be really low. He mentioned that he turned the volume up past his normally listening level and it sounded slightly better for the race scenes, but he said as soon as a dialogue scene came on, the audio was too loud. He said that the bass was none-existent. He also saw at a Imax theater and he found the audio to be louder in the theater.

Unfortunately I'm feeling that this is the new normal 👎

Yeah I think that you maybe right. However, I think that it'll depend on the sound engineer and the director's whims as it does with most films. It seems like some of the directors take less care in working with the sound engineers to produce a fantastic audio mix for a home release.

I don't think it's a coincidence that F1 and Superman have bland audio issues. Both are Warner Movies and both have a premium price tag. I'd guess with 2 relatively "quick to digital" releases, this studio seems to be rushing the product out without taking the time to do a proper audio mix. This is a shame as most previous Warner Movies did a fine job. I believe they want revenue quickly and therefore put out a quick mediocre audio presentation for a cash grab while the movies are hot commodities.

This isn't a K-scape issue, it's a Warner issue.

Definitely not a K-scape issue as you mentioned. I would agree that part of it is Warner wanting to rush the movie out for home release after a movie hits the revenue mark they set for the movie. But I also believe that it's a function of the director of the movie not being invested in making sure the sound for the home release is as good as it can be. The director has to care about the audio for the home release. It seems to me that James Gunn (Superman) and Krazinski (F1) didn't care about putting much effort into the home release.

Correct. Rush is a Universal title licensed to Shout! and available in 4K exclusively on disc. In general, Universal’s boutique-licensed 4K masters are MIA on digital. Hopefully one day. If you want this movie in the best quality, buy the disc (I have).

I agree it’s not a K issue, but I have a feeling this is more of a mandate from the studio, not a lack of attention.

These are titles they expect to sell/rent a lot of, and the vast majority have been watching on TV speakers and sound bars.

What’s the biggest complaint from the average viewer? “I have to turn it up to hear what they’re saying and then the action blasts me out of the room.”

These mixes are the perfect solution for that. They’ve squashed the dynamic range. They are now “safe” for listening on all systems.

I think it’s obvious they have been listening to feedback, and the majority is getting through to them. We need to complain just as loudly, and we should be encouraging the equipment manufacturers and dealers and installers to also complain on our behalf.

We watched F1 last night and, after adjusting the master volume, the elements in that mix sounded as rich and accurate as anything I’ve heard since Maverick, but it’s obvious that they’ve limited the output on the louder scenes to keep all audio in a tighter window to accommodate for TV speakers, soundbars and plastic dual 5” ‘subwoofers’ connected via Bluetooth.

I think that you're on to something. But I listened to a interview a Lucasfilms sound engineer did Audioholics in 2023 I believe, and he said that studios will typically do a separate audio mix for blu-ray/K and for streaming. He said that the blu-ray mix is typically mixed about 5 to 8dbs higher than the streaming mix. He also said for animated movies, the studios mix the audio 5dbs lower than a live action movie. To your point, I he said that studios who are watching the budget will spend less time on the audio mix.

Maybe Warner and other studios have gotten to the point where they don't want to spend the money it takes to create separate mixes. I don't know that to be the case, but if there is a studio that would do that, Warner would be my first guess based on what we've read over the last 3 years regarding their cost-cutting measures.

Fortunately not for everything (i.e.: Final Reckoning.)
Fortunately for me I'm one of the really lucky people that have the the fantastic HTP-1 with beq's built-in. Its just a tap on my tablet and the beq's are loaded.

I have the HTP-1 but I stopped using BEQ several months ago bc there were several times when I couldn't select a movie from the BEQ option in the HTP-1 bc it wouldn't populate. I also stopped using it bc there would be bass added to a movie scene that wasn't there if you listened without BEQ.

What I did to compensate for not using BEQ is to take advantage of the PEQ settings the HTP-1 has. I did a PEQ for my 4 corner loaded subs and my 1 nearfield sub, essentially creating my own house-curve. I enjoy this method more than BEQ bc it's consistent, meaning I don't have to wonder if the BEQ database will load as I'm about to watch a movie and there isn't bass added where it shouldn't be. It also feels more natural yet powerful.

I also have a houes PEQ curve... 4 Cap 6000ULF-TL's and 3 NF's front row... that I use for most everything. I will load beq's for some of the duds that have been released lately.
I've never had a problem loading beq's

Very surprised more people using the HTP-1.
