Since mid-August I have consistently been getting mid-to-high 70mbps download speeds which is my ISP limit. Have I just been "lucky" lately or has K improved their download consistency?

Anyone else seeing an improvement over this time frame?

John

No change here, 100Mb line speed according to 'speedtest' and no ISP capping but K-store downloads average 25Mb looking at my last 4 downloads.

I say, you are all lucky.

It took 6 hours to download an update for my Sony Xperia mobile phone the other day. I will never see a single download from the K-store.

I get 80 - even 90 MBPS from K Escape on my Comcast 150 MBPS connection all the time.
This weekend I upgrade to Comcast 250 MBPS down and 30 MBPS Upload ...
They offered me a 2 Gigabit Download connection via fibre but I did not take it as I feel that anything above 1 gigabit cannot be utilized today due to hardware restrictions within my home.
K Easpae needs to move up from maxing out at 100 MBPS...

I have noticed that the DVD downloads run at slower speeds than the BluRay ones. Perhaps some of their content (more popular) is housed in a higher output area?

100mbit might be a cap for their system internally. When I have done replications, where I am feeding one 3U server from another via GigE on my home network, I am still averaging about 100mbit for a 1TB per day sustained data transfer rate.

If they go faster, perhaps either their RAID controller cannot handle the writes any quicker or maybe they limit their input to 1mbit so they don't compromise the ability to serve the players on your network while they are downloading.

If the speed limit is a RAID controller issue, would the Terra Server, which has no RAID, get us past that speed limit?

I guess I have just been lucky. I had never gone for very long in the past without getting at least on BR download in the 40-50 range. Wishful thinking obviously....

Looking back on the downloads, I have been all of them during that day or very late at night - avoiding early evening times.

I have a 100Mbps connection.

On an Alto connected directly to my router I get an average of 94mbps, I have also seen 97mbps on DVD quality downloads.

On my 3U system which is connected to the router via a switch with a 20ft Cat6 cable:

* 53.1 Mbps

* 50.7 Mbps

* 49.1 Mbps

* 58.7 Mbps

* 70.7 Mbps

My most recent downloads:

96.1 mbps
96.9 mbps
97.2 mbps
96.8 mbps
94.5 mbps
93.7 mbps

I have not had a download slower than 85 mbps since I downloaded Gravity in July (84.1 for the feature and 75.8 for the supplement). That may have been due to demand, as I was at 63.7 mbps when I downloaded The Hobbit, Battle of the Five Armies.

I also didn't have a lot of upper 90's in my download speeds so maybe they did fatten their pipes or increase the output off their servers.

I looked to see how the volume in the store is to see if there is just the same bandwidth divided fewer ways. Their sales are heaviest in Q4 and Q1 and much less in Q2 and Q3. I originally was looking at their volumes versus the prior time and things didn't look so impressive but I changed my spreadsheet to analyze sales quarterly against the same quarter of the previous year. I think that is the most fair way to look at it but it takes more data to get a clear picture. When I did that, it shows the store booming.

2013 2014 2015
Q4 150 211 (N/A)
Q3 31 100 158
Q2 27 83 154
Q1 (N/A) 140 224

Watching sales stagnate from Q4 to Q1 the next year and then drop in Q2 & Q3 hides the growth trend. Looking across each quarter over the years, it is impressive.

Q2 of 2013 might even be inflated because I have no numbers for Q4 2012 when the store was in beta. Q4 of 2015 is currently tracking 158.5 but we have not hit the Christmas rush. I have seen them hit 500+ orders per day during the Christmas shopping season.

It should also be noted that much of this growth can be attributed to increased offerings as more studios come online. If they have Fox or Paramount come online in time for Q4, they might keep their 66% growth rate over prior year. I would expect 4K to bring a lot of sales as there is little competition for 4K content.

All sales data is in number of orders and not in dollars. Unfortunately, I do not have access to the sales in dollars on the store.

At any rate, the store isn't appearing to slow down and so any increase in speed is probably not from fewer people ordering. Maybe they are pushing up the capacity in anticipation of both the Christmas buying season and also the 4K content that will be available soon.

Thanks - good info!

You guys get insane speeds. I'm trying to update the maps on my Navman GPS. The PC is hardwired directly to the Fortigate router. 21 Kbps. Yes, that is 21 Kilo bits per second. It will take me all day to download the 320Mb update.

Despite being the country which invented WiFi technology our internet is rubbish.

I am on a 150MBPS connection and average 90 MBPS.

Cheers

Raj
