Dark Knight IMAX aspect ratio

I’ll join you in that row. Or fly to a true IMAX city. From what I’ve seen online of the 1.43 versions of Dune 1 & 2, we’ve all only seen half the movie in all other theatrical and home formats.

I am not sure where I can see GT laser IMAX instead of 70mm IMAX, unless the 70mm IMAX is having one of its frequent maintenance issues. But that would be a great way to watch it.

The thing is though, ultimately it still depends on your display. With 16:9 TVs and screens to maximise screen height it’s more preferable to IMAX like added height scenes but if you have a 21:9 TV or 2.4:1 screen then scope films are going to be your preference for the added width. In both cases provided neither is cropped you are going to see more of the scene.

Whether seeing more above and below is better than more left and right or vice versa is debatable. I’m nostalgic and love the cinema vibe of a screen getting larger, curtains pulling back after the ads and all that which ironically right now on my 16:9 screen would be open matte 😂.

Unfortunately there is always going to be different aspect ratios than your screen shape, I'd personally rather just one aspect ratio per film otherwise it feels like some parts of the image are less intentional. Like I would find it very hard to imagine someone like Kubrick or David Fincher doing this. It just bugs me.

Cropping within that chosen aspect ratio, that is fine though. I mean different aspect ratios for different screens.

Here's on older list on reddit. The AMC Metreon mentioned is in San Francisco, wihch is where I would fly for Dune 3. My daughter lives there, so it's not so outlandish a thing to do.

Yes, I totally get that. I have a scope screen myself, so what I'm asking for makes very little sense from a screen size standpoint. I'm largely looking at this from the standpoint of the pretty shocking amputation of the original massive scale composition of the 1.43 image to get it to conform to existing screens in theaters and home screens. I would scoot my chairs forward for a home copy of the 1.43 file. Or take it to a friend's house who has a taller screen.

Hmm but Metreon also has 70mm, which I am assuming they would default to using for Dune 3. The GT is just the backup for when it goes down I think?

I'm pretty sure the Metreon IMAX default is the GT dual laser. I've walked up to the screen during credits, and seen the digital pixel structure. I'd certainly want to clarify this beforehand though.

Yeah I think that's because most films aren't shown in 70mm IMAX, pretty much just Nolan does it. But I think for ones that have a 70mm IMAX print, like Dune 3 will have, they will use the 70mm projector.

But as you say will need to check.

The IMAX we have here has the GT laser system (we actually have a few IMAX theaters with the new system out here) but the one in Seattle will also do 15/70. In the times I've gone to 15/70 showings there has almost always been drama unfortunately. And you start seeing a lot of the issues with film in general. I'm all for film capture, but I've lost any romantic notions about film playback at all.

We walked through the Metreon last time I was in SF. I lived there when it opened as the Sony Metreon and it was an incredible facility. Last year when we walked through it was an absolute dump. Felt like a mall on the outskirts of Council Bluffs, Iowa. Of course, we didn't go into the theater, we just got out as quickly as possible. Sad.

Yeah, it's quite sad around there. One of the reasons I moved away.
