there are reactions coming in to the closing of the comparisons megathread. But they don't belong in the "movie updates" thread where they started appearing. This thread consolidates it and welcomes comments.

It’s really unfortunate that the guy who’s doing all the heavy lifting, doesn’t realize that his thread is being hijacked by little minions with nefarious intentions.

It was really beneficial for the community, until goons and vandals showed up.

It devolved very quickly over the last few weeks. Moderators have had to step in a few times over the last year to reign in the rhetoric. It’s locked now. Still a lot of good info in the thread. If you want to start at the beginning you’ll figure out very quickly who’s post you can skip.

lol I already followed that thread. Clearly, it had been awhile since I had been in it! Thank you. Really sorry to hear how bad it got. I am not too particular about image quality but some time placebo gets the best of me and because image quality of a movie was mentioned, it starts to bother me. So I had kind of avoided the thread. Sounds like it was good I did.

Right, the people who couldn’t accept being told that their pricey device and its content aren’t as good as promised are the reason it was closed. Instead of using the “ignore” function like normal people, they preferred to annoy the site owners with complaints as much as possible. Even though Cinelife has probably dreamed about getting this thread closed every night since the day I started it, and he wasn’t even brave enough to close it himself. This guy ... And, ironically, they’re the same people who went off-topic and complained in a completely different thread here.

I'm sure there's a big party planned at Kscape headquarters tomorrow.

I’m not sure about the party at Kscape headquarters, but maybe the champagne is already chilling somewhere in the dealer section — with free 4K Cinematic download tickets being handed out at the door.

The irony is pretty spectacular: the thread containing perhaps the most detailed independent technical analysis of 4KC gets closed, while the underlying PQ problem remains very much open.

Closing a thread is certainly easier than fixing luma.

Josh’s own stated policy says:

“This doesn’t mean we won’t permit (or express our own) criticism of the company, its products, or its strategy. That’s welcomed as long as it’s done in a respectful way.”

And if Kaleidescape disagrees, Josh said:

“their recourse is to post their own public response here on the board.”

Well, we should follow that.

I was a forum mod on a music-related website 20+ years ago. We neither minded nor discouraged respectful disagreement. On those rare occasions users resorted to personal attacks, their posts were deleted and, in some cases, they were privately warned to knock it off or risk banning. Seems to me that’s a better recourse than simply shutting down an on-topic discussion that many find useful.

Josh, I understand the desire to stop the personal fighting, but I think closing this particular thread raises some important questions.

First, Rmarci’s work has probably become the most comprehensive independent technical record of Kaleidescape PQ issues on this forum. If the intention is to preserve that work rather than suppress it, how do you ensure it doesn’t now become fragmented across dozens of individual movie threads and effectively disappear?

Second, I think the forum should preserve Rmarci’s technical analysis in a dedicated, clean thread — captures, methodology, findings and Kaleidescape responses. And frankly, that shouldn’t become another burden placed on Rmarci. He already did the work. As administrator, couldn’t you extract and organize those posts into a technical-reference thread and keep the personal arguments out?

Finally, I think there is a legitimate question about the independence of an owners forum when a thread containing extensive objective criticism of a product gets closed.

I’m not saying this is becoming the other administrator/dealer’s online Kaleidescape store. But from the outside, decisions like this can make it look dangerously closer to that than an independent owners forum should ever want to be.

And if independent owners can only enthusiastically praise the product while sustained technical criticism eventually becomes too inconvenient to host, then what exactly is the purpose of an independent owners forum?

Please preserve Rmarci’s analysis, give it a proper technical home, and let the evidence speak for itself.
