[Buyer’s Guide] Kaleidescape Quality Compared to Blu-ray & other Digital Sources

Not really. Superman's average brightness is actually much higher than most movies, and F1 is right around the average for a typical HDR grade. As for the peak brightness, they are not much brighter than 200 nits, which is already two times brighter than reference SDR but that's the artistic intent, and there's nothing wrong with that.

Movie average brightness is generally very low. Most films rarely average more than 50–100 nits, aside from occasional highlights such as flashes, explosions, or other specular effects.

See this link. I plotted the brightness and metadata for practically every movie that exists, including both the average frame brightness and the average average brightness. You'll see that there's nothing unusual about either of these movies compared to the rest, they're completely in line with typical HDR grading.

HDR is not only the range of the highlights or the deeper blacks its also about the 2020 colours what i prefer above rec 709.
I own a nz700 with a colour filter, and i prefer the color filter above the more light output.
Maybe SDR is better for projectors but again i still prefer the deeper/wider colours.
Except the vast majority of the colors isn’t even remotely close to 2020, it is rarely up to P3. And the bulk of anything that is extending the gamut is the portion of the color palette that most people are not even paying attention to (the darker parts of the image).

That would be a lot of work, but I guess that could be automated.

But as you can see, even the movies with the highest peak brightness have very low per shot average average brightness.
The brightest movie is Rocky III with a per-shot average peak of 2315 nits, but the average average is only 32nits

Makes sense. It was talked about early that HDR would have the bulk of the movie in the first 100-200 nits just Iike SDR, it would just use the extra range for highlights and such. I think a lot of early titles got carried away and were like LOOK HDR!!!!. Kind of like 3D did, which I find gimmicky. But so many people seem to attribute brightness to HDR but that isn’t the point at all. Just like people attribute loudness to music, which is typically the opposite of high dynamic range in that format. Ultimately I think most consumers want bright, not actually real HDR. Same thing happened when music was actually given more dynamic range and then we ultimately got the loudness wars and more and more compression.
 
What do you prefer Kris? SDR or HDR for your set up?

I have a set up with a JVC nz700, panamorf lens and a Stewart G4 studiotek screen and normally i have around 140 nits for HDR laser at 68.

I’m fine with either honestly. I would imagine in a blind test most people wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. SDR provides more accuracy for projector users by far but with good tone mapping the HDR grades look good as well. So I have a mix of them in my system.

Reminds me of the recommendation several years ago for a concert disk by one of the highest end dealers at the bigger forum. When i played the disk, it was all noise and made my ears bleed even though they were favorite tracks from a well respected artist.

These colorists/studios really dont know how to use Dolby Vision.

He said on the 6th, that it would be his last update till he got the K, and they’re currently back ordered, so it could be a bit.
 
Finally got my K, downloading titles now. Quick peek at Tron Ares and Maverick in DV Cinematic but…looked basically same. I’ll jump back and forth later as it’s in Stand alone mode.

Remember, unless you are using raw Dolby Vision output with the K player, the conversion to HDR10 has the artificially brightening issues so the playback will be compromised. If you only playback the HDR10 dedicated files the playback should be fine AS LONG AS the display you are using does not use metadata at all. If it does, that will be compromised as well as the HDR metadata is all screwed up as well.

Is that artificial brightening happening if it's going through a Lumagen Radiance Pro that's setup to not use the metadata to tone map?

Yes, it is on the output side inside the player, so the signal is already compromised on output. The only files that are "safe" for a Lumagen are the dedicated Cinematic HDR10 and 4K SDR files. Same would apply for a MadVR Envy.

If the display is Dolby Vision and you are playing the DV file straight (no player conversion to HDR10), they are fine. It is the conversion that is messed up.

You should be fine as long as you are outputting Dolby Vision directly to those displays. If you are playing back any titles that are HDR10, the metadata may screw things up with those though. I think the Sony displays use the metadata for their tone mapping.

The HDR10 bug applies to ALL HDR10 titles, both standard AND Cinematic HDR10 titles. Just FYI!

Yeah, I shipped my Strato E back to my dealer, but they sold the only Strato K units they had, even though they told me one was reserved for me.
:(

So now I don't have a Kscape player at all, and I have no idea when I'm going to get my Strato K. I just hope they don't prioritize the U.S. and that Canada gets some units soon as well.

Yeah DV, flag on tv is fine. Little tough to AB to HDR10 variation with Sony’s going to DV specific mode and the slight variation of professional HDR10 and DV Dark or Bright to be honest.

You can't knock down what you can't see, now they'll probably keep production paused indefinitely.
 
And I know I continue to sound rough on K, but I have an extremely sensitive bs detector that has continued to fire ever since they pretended they are unable to observe the pixel information their devices output so that they can compare them to the input they received, for simple detection of issues like @Rmarci does
