Bitstream Atmos audio delay (lip-sync issue)

I have a Marantz AVR and I'm a new V owner. I've been noticing an EVER SO SLIGHT lip sync issue. Maybe 250ms at most.
Guessing you meant 25ms? Because that about tracks with my experience. I wouldn’t characterize 250ms as slight.

I still can’t wrap my head around this. I used to work as a music producer, specifically working with vocal timing, so maybe I’m more sensitive to lip-sync issues than most people. But with Kaleidescape, I find a most of the movies unwatchable in Dolby Atmos because the audio is noticeably out of sync. Luckily, when I switch away from Atmos, it’s generally fine.

At this point, though, I really think there’s something going on here. It’s hard to believe Kaleidescape isn’t aware of the issue. My suspicion is that there’s some kind of hardware or software/decoding issue related to outputting the raw Atmos bitstream.

What I find particularly strange is that the amount of delay seems to vary between movies. If this were simply an AVR, projector, or HDMI issue, I would expect the delay to be relatively consistent. Instead, one movie can be reasonably close while another is noticeably off.

I’ve tested this extensively now. I’ve tried two different Strato units, different HDMI cables, different configurations, and isolated the AVR as much as possible. The common denominator is the output from the Strato: with Atmos/bitstream audio, the audio simply isn’t consistently synchronized with the video.

Maybe the ecosystem was never really designed around handling these lossless bitstream formats with perfectly consistent timing, but for a premium system like Kaleidescape, it’s a shame.

Even adding something like a Lumagen doesn’t really solve the underlying problem if the required correction varies from movie to movie. I’d essentially have to adjust the audio delay individually for every film, which obviously isn’t a practical solution.

When I updated the settings to 24 fps, everything seemed to be back in sync.

Another data point...

Strato E -> Denon X3700 -> JVC NP5

Just got my Strato E, so haven't watched many movies yet, and don't recall lip sync issues with the first few movies I did watch. But when recently watching Disclosure Day the lip sync was so far off that it was very distracting. I normally have the auto lip sync feature turned on in the Denon, and turning it off helped a lot, though I could still see a bit of mistiming but the movie was watchable again.

I had the Denon and JVC for a couple of years now and have never had a lip sync issue with my other sources (Apple TV, Zidoo, and Panasonic UB820).

I don't know if this is the fix for everyone but it seems to have worked for me. I have a C connected to a Denon A10H to a JVC NZ700.

What I did is go into the web based settings and changed mode section behavior to allow display mode changes. This allows the player to send a 24fps signal instead of the 60fps.

I hope this helps everyone else having issues.

Is there any downside to this? I assume there isn't any Kscape content with frame rates higher than 24fps.

Spider-Man looked fantastic. Since they are shown in the theater at 24fps probably not.

Anyone know of a cheap movie that has bad lip sync issues? Don't really want to pay $20+ for a movie I don't want to rewatch just to test out settings.

So far these have been mentioned in the thread:

American Graffiti
Batman (1989?)
Disclosure Day
Michael
Ready Player One
Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere
Marty Supreme
