Alto Audio Drop Outs

I have never been able to see a common thread when I have dropouts on either the Alto or DV700. It is REALLY, REALLY annoying. REALLY.

I will have to pay attention the next time it happens to see if it is Atmos related or not (I don't think it is). Even though you noted that when you use PCM vs bitstream it does not occur, I refuse to do that. K needs to find it and address it. For the costs of this hardware, it should not do that. (my $500 Oppo has NEVER had a dropout).

Kaleidescape are working on a fix for this issue.

Hope this is still coming. Watched Star Trek the other day and it had audio skips (Dolby True HD soundtrack). The disk also froze. I did eject from the DV700 and cleaned although it looked perfect. Finally switched my Alto to PCM output (vs bitstream). Disk played perfectly after.... SJ

Watched this the other day from DV700 and didn't notice anything. You got any timestamps for the drop-outs and I could test.

Seems random but was towards the beginning of the second or third chapter. Hope they implement a fix soon for this long standing issue. SJ

Thanks Mike. I know this has been a tricky bug. I personally have only seen it with Atmos or Dolby True HD based audio (when my Alto is set to bitstream). I also think it is when the Alto is streaming across the network, but with costar now in place for my setup this is now only from my DV700 as my Strato plays everything else. Hope they can fix this once and for all! SJ

What makes this really puzzling is the number of working Alto's, mine included, that apparently have not had this issue. (I'm assuming this as fact, but only because I have not experienced it with the Alto, and have not had any client/friends mention it. It's entirely possible I've been lucky in my movie selections, and also possible my clients don't see these dropouts as a big deal. I personally DO see these as a big deal because it is very noticeable when it does happen, and frankly takes me out of the movie for a few seconds. It has happened to me on occasion with other components, but not the Alto. Hopefully you guys can find the source of the problem. (I thought it might be software, but if that were the case it should affect all of us.)

Jim

Happens on my Alto. Not every movie, but it's not uncommon to happen once or twice during a movie. As you say, very distracting when sitting in my theater in something designed to have you immersed.

Yeah and I always get a look from my wife and a “what was that”.... :(

Hi folks. Thanks for the sleuthing. We will investigate.

Since it's been almost a year, do you need more incidents reported?

Last night I must have had a half dozen, maybe dozen, drop outs in Secratariat. Should I and others start reporting to you times so you can look at logs, or do you have enough information for the engineers to eventually fix? I know you said it was being intensively worked on, but it's also been a problem for a very long time.

No, no need to do that at this point. We have a release in final qualification now that has had extensive work done to improve audio (and occasional video) dropouts on both Encore and Premiere systems.

I'm sorry it's been such a long road. It's definitely not something that has been taken lightly. A great deal of careful wrk has gone into this forthcoming release, because we know it's extremely important.

It shouldn't be long now!

Thanks for the update. Much appreciated.
