Authorized Kaleidescape Dealer
Hi All,

K is now selling the following "Re-manufactured" components:

5U Servers that include 5TB of storage (derived from a combination of 400 and 500GB drives). Retai is $4,995.

Movie Player2 (KPLAYER-5000) Retail $995

1080p Min-Player (KPLAYER-300) Retail $995

All of these re-manufactured components come with the standard two year warranty and can be extended to 5 years!!:)

In addition, K has decided to offer additional support to owner's of out-of-warranty components that require service. They now offer "out-of-warranty" replacement for components at VERY reasonable pricing. All K components are available (every Player, every drive, every Server) If you have a question about a specific component and the cost, please check with your dealer. Please also keep in mind these are replacement components, and are not "for sale" (especially at the prices K is quoting.:))

Considering Blu-ray? Run out of room for KDISKS in your Server? Consider the re-manufactured 5U.......:)

Yes, these are still available, and yes, you should purchase through your dealer.

do the 5U servers only support the 500GB max drives or can they take larger? I have a beyond-maxed out 1U and didn't want to pony up for a 3U. I was thinking of swapping all my 1TB drives for 2TB drives, but may opt for the loaded 5U instead.

But would I later be able to, for example, swap out the 1TB's for 2TBs in my 1U and slide the old 1TBs over to the 5U? I haven't done all the math to see if it makes sense, but I imagine that 2 of the 1TB's would be the hot swap and RAID disk (terminology correct?) so I would be picking up 1TB of extra storage in the 5U. with the idea of later upgrading the drives in the 5U??

The largest drive available for the 5U Server is 750GB. The 1TB and 2TB drives currently available do not work in a 5U.

Drives cannot migrate between the 1U/3U Servers and the 5U. The 3U and 1U Servers use the same type of drives, and as you noted the largest currently available for those Servers is 2TB. You can move drives between a 1U and 3U, BUT, swapping drives between Servers requires having the drives "reinitialized" by K support before moving to a new Server.

Moving to 2TB drives in your 1U will obviously increase storage capability, but you are correct that one 2TB will be needed for RAID. You should also consider your long term needs. It has been my experience that most of us underestimate what we will need for storage. My collection continues to grow, and I remember thinking I'd probably never store more than 500 movies and a few hundred CD's. I've easily quadrupled those numbers and now I'm dealing with BR!!

Jim

As far as I am aware only the 3U server utilises a Hot Spare.

A full 1U server (4 x 2TB) will give (3 x 2TB) of available storage plus (1 x 2TB) for K-Raid.

In a 3U server with 4 x 2TB drives will give (2 x2TB) 4TB of available storage. 1 x 2 TB for K-Raid plus 1 x 2TB Hot spare.

Lack of sleep on my part! Of course that is correct. I typed 1U but had 3U on the brain. Thanks for the correction.
