Movie Updates

K doesn’t specify all aspect ratios. Anything wider than 2.40 is labeled 2.40. The Creator, Dust Bunny, Hateful Eight, etc.

2:1 is listed as 1.85:1, etc.

Their aspect ratios are for masking system automation and in between ratios have an adjustment trim value included in the metadata we don’t see.

Thanks. That makes sense.

On a related topic, the AR listings are a bit 'funky' for variable AR movies, where they use the tallest AR, not the widest. That in and of itself would be fine, but the problem is that KScape's otherwise excellent feature to keep subtitles within the content area doesn't work with these VAR movies. In the wider scenes, where the subtitles are often in the black bar area, they are not moved, and remain in the black bar area.

I've reported this to them, requesting this be handled differently, since it defeats the operation that moves subtitles. I do have the Envy to take over in these cases, but it really shouldn't be needed.

The problem with that is people like me who use masking for different ratios don’t want the subtitles to move in VAR movies but do for non-VAR movies.

I wouldn’t want it forced on me like how rewinding now activates subtitles which I hate. There’s also probably not enough VAR movies to bother coding something in and having multiple options.

It's one of the user-selectable features I'd love to see them add. We've already told the player what aspect ratio our screen is and whether or not we're using an anamorphic lens, so now tie that to a preference that allows us to say "If a movie is VAR, shift/don't shift subtitles into the 2.40 area of the image" so those of us to lock off at scope during VAR would be able to tell the system where to put subs during those films.

It's only really been an issue on the latest MI film, that I can remember. But for those who use subtitles more often, it should be an option.

It would certainly be good to have more options I just don’t see it being a priority because there are so few VAR films on KScape. It does seem like it could be a simple fix to lock them to the aspect ratio but then what about people with video processors who like to show the taller scenes full screen in the middle of the screen?

You’d need to have multiple options for all scenarios and it seems like they’d rather keep things simple with less options.

The key is having a single setting to choose how this works for VAR movies, so nothing is forced on anyone.

But out of curiosity, how would it be a problem for you if the subtitles were always moved within the content area? If you're watching such that no content is being cropped, then the subtitles would always be seen, which seems like a good thing.

I also have a masking screen, but I'm not sure how that impacts this behavior.

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding your use case.

I have a Lumagen. If they implemented the feature as I've laid out, telling it to lock the subs in the 2.40 image area would display the subtitles even if I let the Lumagen swap aspect ratios. They'd be higher than normal, but they'd still display.

It wouldn’t impact me because I don’t use subtitles for anything other than foreign languages but I was more thinking around different scenarios where it might be an issue for others where on size fits all doesn’t work. @thrillcat explained what is was meaning about the Lumagen

Yes, if I were using subtitles having them covering even more of the picture in the middle would be something I wouldn’t want forced on me as I do use the keep within screen frame option.

In case there is anyone from K viewing this, today I asked for the K Store to ask NBC/Universal for the 4K HDR version of "Big Miracle" 2012. It used to be on Netflix in this format, but they removed it and no one has it available now. If K got it, it would be an exclusive for them.

- Green push and paler colors... Probably the result of their stupid DNR + fake grain.
- Wierd MDL HDR10 metadata. This movie has pixels that hit 3000nits

Looks like some poor experimental encoding... I wish KS would stop altering their mezzanine file.
Why are they even allowed to do that in the...
