US BR & 4K Releases for May & June 2024

I've found catalog titles from Paramount to be fantastically unreliable on K this last year.

In the past 12 months alone we've missed Halloween H20, Monster Squad, Rosemary's Baby, Scream 3, Sweeney Todd, and The Naked Gun. Add to that the 4K SDR only releases of The Spongebob Squarepants Movie, Up In The Air, Face/Off, Scrooged, Sabrina, The Manchurian Candidate, Flight, Footloose, An Officer and a Gentleman, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, and World War Z.

So, yeah, I pre-ordered The Crow on 4K UHD months back.

That's another 9 films I can add to my MIA list. My delight with K was very short lived especially given how long I had aspired to ownership. Very quicky it turned to annoyance and then shortly after mild delusion. It stayed there until a few months ago when it turned into disappointment and I fear I might soon regret owning K at all which is a very sad state indeed.

Hopefully it is just a blip and K will sort things out soon and get releases back on track. However, at the moment I am finding my Oppo is taking a beating whilst the Strato just sits there idle. At this rate I will start to turn it off and just power it back on as needed. If K ever enforced strict access to the US store and just left me with the UK it would almost be useless and very probably unsellable for anything more than beer money.

While I definitely poke and pry here for titles to get released or updated I can't say I share this same issue even though I have bought quite a few discs in the last few months that are from licensed boutiques that likely won't hit K or any other service due to the licensing. I still use K WAYYYYYYYY more than I use my Oppo. I'm happy to have both coexist as there will never be a world where K just gets absolutely everything I want to watch. There was never a time that I thought that would be the case either.

Monster Squad wasn't Paramount, it was a boutique label (Kino I think??)
The 4K UHD is produced by Kino, but it's available digitally in 4K Dolby Vision from Paramount. It's the same with Face/Off, 3 Days of the Condor, Tropic Thunder, etc. Those we got (Face/Off is missing HDR), so Monster Squad should be fair game for K.

I completely concur with this sentiment. Although I might get a little cranky here when a particular title is missed, I'm mostly about the data and trying to understand K releases. With my own collection, K covers ~70% of what I want. Sure, it could be 80%, and that 10% is frustrating. But, on a whole, the K Store is carrying quite a bit of weight for it's size.

Of course it would be great if K had everything, but over the last few years I've gotten really good being okay with not owning everything. I've moved more toward movie consumer vs movie collector. Yes, I like having access to films I like, and I have a decent sized collection, but I'm okay waiting longer for catalog titles to show up. I don't need to order the disc if it's not on K on release day. I'll wait it out until I feel like I want to watch it again, then decide if I'm okay with the HD version or if I want to pick up the disc.

Same with pricing. I put things in my Wish List and buy when either they go on sale, or when I want to watch.

I might feel differently as I think about retirement and have more time to watch more films, but as it stands, that's at least one decade away if not two.

I think a lot of the frustration we collectively have with K (as seen here and many other threads) would be alleviated if it was more open with why and how. I've never seen such a tight-lipped crew! So we are left to speculate and run wild. Thanks to Mike for giving us some info when he can, but I'm genuinely puzzled by why K doesn't say more than "That's our contract." There could be a dozen reasonable reasons why some of the titles we talk about are not at the K store and most of us would understand. But the inconsistency is frustrating and the generic "Well, it's contractual" is just very Meh.

And yes, while I'm often very frustrated, I love the platform. There's still a lot of content that's not out on physical media, like the whole 007 collection! I streamed a bit of something from the iTunes store yesterday as a diversion and it looked like crap! (One of the Harry Potter films.)

Fingers crossed for The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare and (maybe?) The Last Stop in Yuma County overnight tonight.

It’s a slim week or the calm before the storm?

Portent of things to come? I hope that K don't forget about us to focus on 4k SDR 5.1 versions of existing releases for the cinema crowd. Maybe B2C is no longer in their future in favour of B2B.
Portent of what the studios are releasing this week.

Lot's of great disc releases this week that we've had for a couple months, even years now. Dune 2, Once Upon a Time in the West, Gravity w/Atmos blu-ray, American Sniper. Lots of steel books. A couple boutique remasters that K doesn't have an agreement with.

Lighten up a bit. It's a slow week because we have most everything being released on disc today.
