US Digital Releases for July & August 2026

Instant upgrade!

Oh man, I received my lionsgate limited 4k disc recently. Well another $5 won’t hurt to get the C’matic experience. 😊

Any idea why the new Batman Knightfall animated movie has hit the other digital platforms but not K?

K doesn't get Warner animated titles anymore. If you search the store you'll see they started with 4K HDR, dropped to 4K SDR, dropped to HD, and now just dropped. They apparently don't sell well.

Some would point out that if you start lowering the quality of your offerings then the sales of said offerings are bound to suffer, leading to a downward spiral where you don't receive any titles. Some would.

Thanks, that’s strange there are really obscure movies on there but draw the line on Warner animation.
I concur, but I'll bow to the data on this one. Sort 4K titles by popularity and you'll find Warner 4K animation at the bottom of the list. They didn't sell. Oddly, I don't have a problem with K not getting the titles now. What I had a problem with was the subpar releases between initial poor sales and eventually dropping titles. The whole "Maybe we'll just limit costs, lower the quality, and see how they do" thought process should be purged. The moment you've decided it's not worth having at full quality is the moment you've decided it shouldn't be in the store.

Completely agree. As a thought process it is just bonkers.

Every 4K release should also have 4KC.

Philosophically, I agree. But, K’s still at a place where we don’t get all 4K releases from major studios. Adding the greater burden of 4KC on every title at this point will have one single effect: Even fewer 4K releases. :(

I certainly don’t agree that 4KC is the enemy of more 4K releases. K-scape is cranking out catalog 4KC versions quite nicely right now. However, they won’t commit to 4KC for all 4K releases going forward. Huge misstep. K-scape has planted their flag on quality and convenience.

This is where idealism meets the real world. K is missing SD to HD upgrades, HD to 4K upgrades, SDR to HDR upgrades, HDR to Dolby Vision upgrades, and now 4K to 4KC upgrades. The affected titles are in the thousands, and annually we’re lucky to see a very small handful of backlog titles. Further, none of this addresses missing titles which are obviously in the tens of thousands.

K has historically added 5-10 new titles a week for a total annual addition of 300-500 titles and associated encodes. People are now expecting K to upgrade their current catalog of nearly 3,000 4K movies while still maintaining/increasing their new releases, all in short order. I’m not saying anything is right or wrong, I’m saying it’s unrealistic and realistically something has to give somewhere.

The Strato K is looking like quite a hit, and hopefully it’ll increase the audience and sales to the point K can increase resources.and get the K Store to the place all of us want it to be.

Updating the current catalog will take time. Perfectly understandable. Just like the DV conversions did. However, it doesn’t take much time to say all future 4K releases will also have 4KC. It just takes commitment. A commitment to offering their customers the best available video experience. That makes current customers happy and attracts new ones.

When I’m about to purchase a new title, I still go through a comparison of K-scape versus disc — video quality, audio quality, special features, price. K-scape is my preference, but it’s not an automatic decision. If K-scape isn’t offering the best quality available, that’s usually an easy decision to purchase the disc. If we’re talking SD & HD, then iTunes enters the calculus too. So, it’s against K’s interests on multiple fronts not to fully embrace being the best.

Problem Child 3: Junior in Love (1995) in HD with PCM Stereo from NBCUniversal

Sing Street (2016) in C_DV/C_HDR/C_SDR/DV/HDR/SDR Atmos from Lionsgate

Tammy and the Bachelor (1957) in HD with PCM Stereo from NBCUniversal

Union Pacific (1939) in HD with PCM Stereo from NBCUniversal

Now available for Pre-Order in US
Finding Emily (2026) C_DV/C_HDR/C_SDR/DV/HDR/SDR/HD with Dolby TrueHD Atmos from NBCUniversal

Sure, but you know they stopped, right? They have roughly a third of available DV titles from major studios, including many titles still stuck at SDR. K never made a commitment to provide all future movies in DV nor did they commit to adding DV to all available titles on the store. In fact, they used language nearly identical to their comments on 4KC.
However, it doesn’t take much time to say all future 4K releases will also have 4KC. It just takes commitment. A commitment to offering their customers the best available video experience. That makes current customers happy and attracts new ones.
Sure, and that commitment comes at the cost of titles. It simply does. For many years we've been told we can't get titles because of limited resources and bandwidth. Want a 4K catalog upgrade for a title in HD? It's already in HD and isn't popular enough, so for K it's the same resources to upgrade that title (with only upgrade pricing) or bringing in a brand new 4K title that might sell better. Due to 4KC the encoding effort is now double and we'll see a negative impact even without a blanket 4KC commitment.

Again, I completely agree with this. And, I kind of hate typing these responses. But, it's best to rip the band-aid and accept. I also want to clarify how I can reconcile my seemingly conflicting statements about quality:

I don't agree with K's title prioritization. Direct-to-video (or short-lived theatrical) releases are prioritized over 4K catalog releases. These can be found throughout the lowest 20% popularity on the K Store, but K persists with this strategy. (To be fair, there may be contractual obligations at play that I'm not privy to.). As long as this exists, I want K to have the freedom to not apply 4KC.

And, to be clear, the 4K versions of these titles on K are the BEST quality available anywhere, as these titles don't receive discs to compare to. Examples taken directly from the Recently Added Page: Horsegirls, The Isolate Thief, Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass, Our hero balthazar, Night Nurse, Lucky Strike, Leviticus, The Breadwinner, Stop! That! Train!, Balls Up, and Girls Like Girls. These titles target digital sales/rentals/streaming, and K's offerings are already the highest quality. Further, as a result of these titles being on the store, we are not getting titles like The 7th Voyage of Sinbad 4K, Popeye 4K, Talladega Nights 4K (Theatrical Cut), The Patriot 4K (Upgrade), South Park: Bigger, Longer, Uncut, and many many many more.

K can't do it all. K has yet to fulfill promises made at the release of the Strato V. Committing to 4KC on every title ties their hands moving forward. Now, should K always apply 4KC to theatrically-released studio titles available on disc? Yeah, that I can get behind and I think that's a fair proposal to push.

IMAX is completely overrated in the theater. I find they can be a tad too loud and the picture quality is not drastically different than regular theater. The pricing is off the charts (over $100 for a family of 4) and the chairs didn't even recline in the last one I went to. The only positive it has is the screen is larger.

I have also noted that attendance is lower in IMAX than the same day in other theaters. I live in an affluent area and I guess people are not seeing the value.

Last I heard, IMAX was not doing well financially.
I have outright stopped going to Lie-MAX theaters. I saw the Odyssey in Lie-Max and that was the last straw, for the reasons you stated. The next week I saw it in 70mm and it was a vastly better experience. I’ll only go to a proper 1.43:1 IMAX from now on.

Is this a list of all releases including discs or just digital releases on Kaleidescape?

I thought the latter, but you have The Descent Part 2 listed as a 4K release, which is disc only. It’s SD on Kaleidescape.

It will never use less bandwidth, fewer resources, or be more efficient, for Kaleidescape to simply generate every format for every new release film while the mezzanine file is pulled up on the encoding desktop in the pipeline.

All digital releases from studios K has contracts with. Disc dates are listed when a simultaneous digital release is expected.

The Descent Part 2 was released by Lionsgate digitally in 4K Dolby Vision on the disc release date and can be found at other digital stores in this quality. It doesn't appear on K because: 4K Catalog Upgrade, Horror, K didn't get Part 1 (either version) last year. :(

Oh okay, that makes sense now. I got excited for a moment there that I could move two more Plex movies over to K, but nope.
