NEWS: Strato K Movie Player with 8K capability and new "4K Cinematic" full-chroma & higher bitrate support

It looks like it's In Store Only and the website won't let you search stock by store. So, gonna have to give each a call and hope they'll do a stock check for you. My guess is they're few and far between at this point.
Yeah, at this moment the only way to get a K from Best Buy is to go to a Premium Design Center. They can order it via their system.

When I search Best Buy, all the non-K-player Kaleidescape items also show "Pick up in store" or "Get it By such-n-such date". Makes me think they don't actually have any.

I didn’t think dealers keep stock of any high end gear and order from the distributor when needed?

Yeah, I think that is the case. It may be that some dealers stock some high-end gear, but it's going to be less than the other gear they sell.

Thanks for the Strato K write up @KDeering (and Sammi

From the linked article:
4K Cinematic Dolby Vision Derived from a 4:2:2 source
  • Cinematic Dolby Vision currently begins with a 4:2:2 source
Is that true that DV could not be derived from a 4:4:4 mezzanine? I thought there was some commonality to the mezzanine files and those source files are just processed in different ways for the various store offerings.

To put it another way, I thought a DV offering on the store may have entered the KScape building as a 4:4:4 HDR10 package with associated DV metadata and could be subsampled down to 4:2:2 while being encoded for 4K_C DV delivery. The 4K_C HDR10 offering would just be that base HDR10 file with full chroma.

Good article otherwise! (y)

There wasnt much consideration for us large flat panel users. Would they still recommend this product for someone with a 100 inch mini LED display watching mostly DV titles?
They acknowledged that in the review that it will benefit flat panel DV users. I have a 97 OLED and it does help in overall picture stability/quality in certain dark and/or fast moving scenes. It definitely varies by title and not visible across all movies

I agree that the benefit is there. In terms of which 4KC file version to use, conventional wisdom seems to be that if your display is DV capable, then use HDR DV, but I do wonder if HDR10 might end up being superior in some cases?

I am struggling with this as well. I am using the DV versions primarily, but my understanding is that Sony's DV implementation is not as good as their HDR10 using their internal dynamic tone mapping. I tried comparing Dune Part Two DV and HDR10, but couldn't decide which I thought was better. Maybe that is the answer, if I can't tell then it doesn't matter, but I wish I had a more definitive answer.

I can't answer directly to the details of the KScape workflow, but a 4:4:4 source is fairly common in the physical media industry.

Being a Lumagen and a Christie M 4K15 user, I'm sticking with 4KC DV files hoping that the DV->HDR12 conversion will be mostly fixed in kOS 26.1.1. Logically I think having 11.5 bit of luma and chroma data in 4:2:2 beats having 10-bit at 4:4:4 in visual quality.

I think if your display (or one of the displays in your network) natively supports DV you should prioritize that. They are both so close, it could be a “horses for courses” situation. But I’m also waiting for an exhaustive review post the upcoming (Dv->HDR10 conversion) update.
