Looks like The Da Vinci Code is getting a 20th anniversary 4k release on May 19th. Hopefully Kscape will upgrade the store version from 4k SDR to the new HDR/dolby Vision and an add the new Atmos soundtrack.

We can hope, cross our fingers, and submit requests.

To be clear, The Da Vinci Code has been available digitally in 4K HDR for many years. Sony provided K's earliest 4K titles, all in SDR. Over the years, Sony has updated these titles to refine the audio/video, add HDR color-grading, etc. These updates often appear both physically and digitally, and K is notorious for not getting them.

Lawrence of Arabia got its 237th (Ok, maybe 6th) 4K UHD Blu-ray re-re-re-release this week including updated visuals with Dolby Vision. K? Still no update with requests going back at least 7 years at this point. Taxi Driver? Mask of Zorro? The Davinci Code? My Best Friend's Wedding? It Happened One Night? The Patriot? The Way We Were? And more...

Get a request in, but I wouldn't hold your breath. :(

FYI, The Patriot has been announced by Sony for 4K Steelbook release on June 9th. Mentioned in my prior post, all the same applies. On K in 2016 4K SDR, later released on disc/digital in 4K HDR (Theatrical Only, Extended in HD), now facing a 4K Dolby Vision release of both cuts(!) likely both disc and digital. Get in those requests and hope.

I make sure I put a request in for both movies 👍

I’m really hoping the Extended Edition on K gets upgraded but it sounds like Sony does not have the best track record of doing that. I’ve had the 4K steelbook preordered for months. Would love to be able to cancel/return it but I also knew when I committed to K that I’d still buy discs depending on what was available on K.

I guess we’ll know in a few days.

Sony has a pretty good record here, but K has a pretty poor record of getting them. :(

Sony has a good record in what way?
They release their 4K remasters digitally and when this applies to alternate cuts those are made available too. However, just because something is available to license doesn’t mean K will get it. Two specific examples are the extended cuts of Rudy and Stripes. Both are available in 4K but K chose not to get them.

An. I have been waiting on a 4K of this particular movie. I never got the regular edition on 4K and was glad when they finally announced it.

K will choose not to offer a title even when the studio offers it to them? Any idea why?

Limited resources. This is the biggest single difference between a digital store like K and Apple, Fandango, etc. Those other stores just "get everything" but K has to pick and choose the titles they carry based upon available resources. This is why sometimes K doesn't get titles, or gets them in a lower resolution, or gets them without Extras, etc. Every title on the K Store has to justify its existence through sales. If K doesn't think they'll sell enough, they won't bother getting it.

Apple adds 30-50 digital titles weekly, K adds 5-10. K can only acquire, encode, and support a fraction of titles available to them.

In most cases I actually prefer the theatrical cut of a film. Exceptions include Blade Runner, The Abyss, The Martian, Avatar, and Gladiator. However, I generally like to sometimes rewatch the extended or special edition for a different take. So I like having all in 4K. Exceptions include the Star Wars trilogy and ET.

While other digital stores now have The Da Vinci Code in 4K Dolby Vision with Dolby Atmos, there has not yet been any updates to the Extended Cut of the film. It's unknown if this will occur or if Sony is sticking with an updated theatrical cut only. If people want both cuts in the highest quality then the recommendation remains to get the disc set. Unfortunately, as expected K did not update their offering.
