Last movie watched

"About Schmidt". I loved the acting and subdued brilliance of the script.
I love Jack N but this is probably my least favourite movie of his. It's each to his own but I actually sat through it a second time with friends because I thought I miss be missing something but it felt no better. It's just a blind spot for me obviously. But he has so many great movies that I have plenty of others to choose from. :)

Saw this movie listed as one of the great "smaller" movies of 2025 and we decided to try it on a whim last night.

RECOMMENDATION: Don't watch the trailer for this movie... it is one of those that just gives away too much and spoils some of the funniest moments of the movie. We were very sad we knew what was going to happen in many sections because of the damn trailer.

WOW, it's absolutely fantastic!! Laugh-out-loud hysterical, beautifully filmed in a great location, a tight 100 minutes runtime, and very heartwarming with some surprising plot turns. Has that intelligent wry British comedy style, like a Stephen Merchant / Ricky Gervais comedy or maybe a Simon Pegg movie without any of the violence. Doesn't fall into the obvious storytelling traps it might have. My wife and I both loved it from the first few minutes until the credits rolled.

The Rotten Tomatoes synopsis gives a good overview if you want to know a bit of what you're getting into, without spoiling anything:
THE BALLAD OF WALLIS ISLAND follows Charles (Tim Key), an eccentric lottery winner who lives alone on a remote island and dreams of getting his favorite musicians, McGwyer Mortimer (Tom Basden & Carey Mulligan) back together. His fantasy turns into reality when the bandmates and former lovers accept his invitation to play a private show at his home on Wallis Island. Old tensions resurface as Charles tries desperately to salvage his dream gig.

Carey Mulligan is great as always, but the two male leads were super impressive considering they are not only first time actors in a film, but also first-time screenplay writers. Tim Key is hysterical, as should be since he's apparently a British standup comedian and improv performer, but is impressive as an actor in his first big movie. And the other lead, Tom Basden, is not only the co-lead actor, also a first-timer, but is the co-writer, as well as the composer of all the music in the film, singing like a dozen of those songs very credibly in his role as a semi-washed-up folk-rock singer in an artistic midlife crisis.

Reasonable rental price, but at purchase price of $15, is cheap enough that it's probably worth just buying.

Eager to hear others' reviews here.

Finally watched The Ballad of Wallis Island. Great film! Thanks for the recommendation.

So glad you liked it!! This movie deserves more attention... it's so well made and a very fun story.

The wife and I watched Marty Supreme the other night. We both really enjoyed it. Video was very good but the sound.. Atmos was excellent!
I'd have to say this is reference quality demo material if you want to show off sounds we experience in every day life.

100% agree. We watched it last night. I was very surprised at the Atmos, especially for a non-action/sci-fi movie.

I really appreciated the Atmospheric noise floor in this movie.

A Quite Place Day One.. is the one that made me aware of just how encapsulated you can be with a really good Atmos track.

I bought the A Quiet Place trilogy around Halloween but never got to watch them. Looking forward to them even more now!

All the Quiet Place movies are excellent that way. The red light scene in the first one is some of the best sound design and Atmos I've ever heard.

The monster stomping around on the floor above her, the subtle ticking of the egg timer in the rear left corner where she left it as a distraction, the sounds illustrating how the monster hears... it all comes from exactly the right place and sounds amazing.

I'm more referring to the constant atmospheric sounds that are all around you and throughout the movie....

I finally got around to watching Marty Supreme last night. It was worth the 2.5 hours, although I felt it was getting a little long (I may have just been tired). It was chaos from the get-go, and Timothée Chalamet is so good. I really thought Kevin O'Leary was surprisingly good in this. It doesn't seem like folks agree with this sentiment in general from some quick googling, but I think that may have to do with him as a person outside of the movie.

I still have a few Best Picture candidates to get through, and this one won't be at the top of my list, but it's still well worth the watch.

Kinda my feeling as well. I thought it was definitely worth the watch, enjoyed it, really well acted. O'Leary was fine, I wouldn't say he was good or bad, nothing about his performance stood out to me (but I'm one who doesn't like him at all).

Definitely not best picture, had this been released 8 months earlier, I would've been excited to watch it, and would have enjoyed it, but without the hype in advance I wouldn't have even considered this to be a nomination for best picture. But I enjoyed it.
