NEWS: Kaleidescape Will Release Upgrade Details This Week

Ok just got the email- seems to completely solve the problem and allow for importing of disks in to the premiere system servers after they are grouped with the encore, so we get everything we wanted! Anyone else see something I'm missing? I think this solves the problem regarding not being able to have our disk imports continue to play from a server if we have an encore system!

I agree - looks pretty good. Only thing is giving up the Disney imports, but I think we have most of them imported already and I could probably live with waiting 30 seconds for anything added in the future.

I was also happy to see these details. As someone with a Premiere system with a DV700 disc vault, I did download many movies from the K store in order to free up spaces in the disc vault. As I understand all these prior movie downloads will have to be transferred to the new Encore system components. Is there an easy way to determine how much disc space is used up in my current vault by the downloaded movies so I can determine how much new disc space I will need?

That reminds me - I still with there was RAID protection in the new servers so that there would never be a re-download condition even if it means less usable capacity. Hopefully that's still on the roadmap.

My head is spinning....with all this ...

They need to post a video on youtube for dumb guys like me...

1, What I gather is that there is no point adding more capacity to my Premiere system. As it will only be good for downloads of discs.. and off course those discs will take vault space..
2. I did not subscribe to Disney - should I go ahead and do it not so that it ca work on the encore system?

Thanks...

Here's my question.
Is there an easy way to find out exactly how much storage is being used on our Premiere servers for downloaded content? Would like to know how much storage would be needed on the Encore right off the bat.

Issue for me is I have a massive 1U system. Once I convert, I will no longer be able to use movie store for downloads in this system. From what I understand, I now have to download to a terra server. I have 3 brand new 6tb disks that will be just for importing disks now and can't use in the movie store. Thats the only negative I see.

I am not seeing the advantage of this.

1) This proposal basically makes my 3U server unusable in the sense that I can never fill the capacity by only importing discs.
2) It also forces me to opt-in to Disney if I still want to play these movies from my server.
3) K has now said they have no plans to support scripting on the Encore line.
4) Not clear what this does for music support.

Good morning everyone!

Let me take a moment to answer a couple of the questions that have been asked.
  1. I expect that we will have a tool of some sort that will make it easy to calculate how much of your disk space is curently being used for downloaded movies, to aid in specifying how much storage is needed on Encore.
  2. Regarding music, the thing to understand about this upgrade is that you will have an Encore system and a Premiere system (although the Premiere system will be operating in a special mode). The Encore system will not have music features, but the Premiere system will, and you can still use those features if you leave at least one player grouped with the Premiere system. Essentially, when you want to watch movies, you use the Encore system. When you want to listen to imported albums, you switch to the Premiere system.
  3. You will have to agree to the amended terms & conditions regarding Disney content before you can undertake this upgrade. No need to do that today if you don't want to. Just understand that it will be necessary.
If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask. I'll be keeping a close watch on this thread. We understand that it's a little bit of a novel concept, but most of that novelty is really related to the setup. Once everything is configured, the experience should be pretty seamless.

I'm impressed. I think they really listened to us.

There are so many little tangents and sides to this, I'm not sure they could have addressed this in a way that would be 100% to everyone's absolute satisfaction- but this seems like a big improvement over where those of us with Premiere (and Cinema?) systems thought we were only a few short weeks ago.

I remember the move to Blu Ray- that also had some wrinkles we all had to navigate. And Kaleidescape really did everything they could to get us there.

I have no idea, but it seems to me that the people at Kaleidescape must have been working day and night to get us to this place.

In my case, I have no 4K displays. I will someday upgrade my projector to 4K but I don't see that in the near future. So for me this is really about getting internal decoding of HD audio in the player. The time frame for that and for this upgrade seems to me to be somewhere around 2Q/3Q 2016. Aside from that, only real issue is about adding new movies- I have a lot of 3U server space left. But so be it. I can always add movies via physical discs as I also have a lot of vault space.

Does anyone know for how long this upgrade remains open?

Overall I have to say to Kaleidescape: well done!

Thanks, Jerry!

There's no sunset date planned for availability of the upgrade at this point. That might happen at some point in the future but if it did, I expect that we would have some sort of "last call".

We haven't announced a date for full internal audio decode of lossless audio on Strato, but the player hardware is designed to do this and the feature is part of our roadmap. We know it's important for customers who have certain audio setups.

The upgrade process does not have an assigned end date. Keep in mind this upgrade is software based, not monetary, and those interested will essentially be "opting-in" to the software upgrade that will allow the Premiere components to integrate with Encore, and most importantly, present as one single system.

Thanks for posting Mike, I'll answer what I can and leave the unknowns to you.:)

Jim

Yes, well clarified, Jim! Thanks. The only reason I could foresee why the upgrade would become unavailable in the future is that it does take ongoing software testing resources to support the data migration pieces, but really that's a hypothetical situation. No plans at all at this point for an end date.

Maybe I'm alone here, but i was also looking for a premier server upgrade. I currently have a1U server and disc vault. Most of my movies are stored in the vault with only a few downloads. I would like to trade up from my server to a Strato with internal storage. Thus, I could play all of my Blu rays directly from the vault, and then have nearly all of the Stato internal storage for subsequent downloads. Any chance for this route of upgrade path?

Thanks!
Kevin

Hello Kevin!

You could certainly still set up a system that way if you don't mind playing your discs from the vault rather than from an imported copy on the 1U. We designed this upgrade because most customers who already had Kaleidescape systems wanted to keep the ability to play their imported movies. This applied especially to folks whose systems are capable of importing DVDs.

What were you wanting to do with your 1U?
