What Would You like Kaleidescape To Announce at CEDIA 2013

I was thinking about all the different lines we carry and what we might expect as far as new product announcements when my thoughts turned to Kaleidescape.

As a Kaleidescape dealer and end user I have a wish list in my head and thought I would share what I would like to see announced at CEDIA this year. Besides additional studios, which I know we all want to see, below are few things that I would like to see.

I am separating this into 2 areas, Music and Movies. Let's start with Music.

Music
1) Adding a "Music" section in the KSCAPE store as well as adding more studios including music only studios such as Telarc, Decca, London Records, etc.

2) Dedicated Multi-Zone Music Player with the ability to import and playback not only CD's but also SACDS, Music Blu-Rays and FLAC files.

4) Since WB is already on the KSCAPE Store I would like to see the entire WB's Music catalog offered as HIGH RESOLUTION audio files (FLAC, AIFF, etc) on the KSCAPE Store.

5) BR quality concerts

6) Better DB recognition of music.

Movies
1) More studios

2) Resume Script - When playing from a script, the system should remember where the script is running, if stopped or paused, and have the option to ?Resume Script? and continue the entire script not just the last scene or movie from where it was stopped.

3) Number of Plays - From the list screen, there should be a counter for number of times a movie has been played. This can help parents additionally monitor plays as well as better understand themes and interest in the playlist.

4) Resume Play All Episodes - When playing all episodes on in television series, if you stop or pause, the system should remember the original request and resume the play all rather than just the last scene/episode.

5) Better recognition of Movies especially concert DVD's and Blu-Rays

These are just a few things I would like to see, especially on the Music side.

For movies, I want:

1) 3D capability
2) 4K/HD Ultra capability

John

Will a cat 5e or 6 line be able to carry the data for 4k/HD Ultra. I read that titles fully embracing HD Ultra could be +50GB-75GB, vs the 25-30 for BR? I would imaging that this would require a pretty whole change to infrastructure.

I would like the ability for the players to decode PCM.

The existing Cat5e would have no problem handling a stream for 4k.

I'd like to see an audiophile-grade standalone single zone music player with high-end onboard DACs and 2 sets of balanced audio line level outputs. And if they can add an Eq solution (such as Audyssey) and digital bass management to the player would be awesome.

So pretty much a Sooloos/Meridian application, but branded K. Though you might be hard pressed to find the dual balanced outputs. There seems like so much synergy between these two companies merging. One can dream.... I agree, it is annoying that one cannot do what the other can, and vice versa.

...actually I'm very happy with the RCA analog outputs of the M700 to my new Halcro dm8 pre-amp, the sound is a big improvement over the digital outs via my Integra AVP. But if they were to build a dedicated music player that had impeccable sonic pedigree I would buy it. It couldn't be too difficult to bolt an OEM DAC onto their existing hardware and perhaps throw in a chip with the Audyssey Eq solution, surely?

I could go out and buy a high-end DAC but it would be so much nicer to have a whole solution in a standalone Kaleidescape chassis.

...and DSD128 music downloads from the K-store and an on-board decoding capability in the music player so I don't need an external DAC.

Further to my comment at #9. Recently I've been using the M700 as a music player, connected directly to my pre-amp via the stereo analog outputs. I was blown away by the sound quality, but figured the M700 probably wasn't designed with much attention to high quality analog audio output and thus figured a dedicated external DAC might bring me something even better. To my surprise, wrong! I've just bought a highly regarded dedicated DAC, connected it to the coax output of the M700 and had a few hours of A/B listening this afternoon. The analog outputs of the M700 actually sound better than using a dedicated DAC!! I'll give the DAC another day or 2 to burn in, but from what I'm hearing so far the DAC doesn't bring anything to the party that the M700 can't do already. So K really have built a good stereo analog output on the M700.

I had a similar experience. I use my C1 (old) as a source from my vintage 2-channel music system. I demo'd a high end DAC to see if it would make a difference and really couldn't tell that it was any better. I am not sure which DAC's K uses internally but they seem to be very good.

Now if I could just get the K to add support for High Resolution Audio formats I would be all set.

^^^What were the shortcomings of the original k-4000 music player in regards to this?

Interesting viewpoints but to add another and if you want a quality music experience that matches the K-Scape movie one then look beyond traditional DAC's and audition a Linn Klimax DS player and studio master downloads. Then you really will hear the difference - night and day.

So what I would like to see is is the option to have studio master music quality downloads in the store and the ability to rip music CD's in FLAC, WAV, Apple Lossless (ALAC) etc. lossless audio formats with up to 24-bit 192 kHz native sample rate and the ability to stream from the K-Scape.

At the moment the K-Scape only provides good audio quality and for stereo I want great audio quality without having the need to have separate storage systems.

I totally agree that K needs to support all the higher resolution formats to be competitive on music. I don't think that they need to offer their own downloads (it would be nice however).

I never had a k-4000 music player so I can't say. Maybe others can comment on this.
