Add Demo Trailer Before Watching a Film

It would be an amazing feature to be able to add a Dolby Atmos bumper trailer before watching a movie on KScape. This shouldn’t be too hard to do. All the team needs to do is add the Dolby ATMOS Trailers to the KS library and allow us to download them free of charge. Once we add them to our library, we should then be able to click an option to have them play before a movie starts.

You can do this now on R_Video and before that the Zappiti app.

Not quite what you're looking for, but check out the free Trinnov downloads on K. Some really nice ones in there and if you were having a special movie gathering, you could always create a Script that started with one of these and follow it up with your movie to start afterwards.

I really like this idea and I'm going to try to add it into my Popcorn Ready chrome extension in v3 which will support local playback controls. I hope to release this version very soon. I'll try to add an option for 0-5 random movie trailers (that are playable on the same system) before the feature starts and/or a random Trinnov demo.

Here's what I came up with. I found the settings for a "Projector Sync Delay" were necessary since the trailers, demo, and movie could all be different video qualities. It adds a pause duration to the start of each step in the pre-show routine. Still testing and fine tuning that process but it's already working pretty well. (Ignore the "Copy Pre-show Debug" button as that's just for my testing)

This looks very cool! Looking forward to trying it out. Just in time for Dad’s Summer Film Festival #7!

Very cool.. Can't wait to try it out.

FYI - it looks like Kaleidescape has now added a DTS Immersive Audio Demos title to the store.

Did the DTS download get removed? I did a search and came up empty.

I do miss the THX demo from the old days.
It doesn't come up by searching but I already have it so I was able to grab the link: DTS Immersive Audio Demos

Be warned that it's just a dry demo of someone speaking through each speaker one at a time. Useful, maybe, but not really "cool". The Trinnov ones are way more fun.

Interestingly it's in the "Special Interest" genre, but doesn't actually show up when I click that link: Special Interest Movies

I still Kaleidescape is missing a opportunity by not having some way to add pre-rolls.
It would be super simple for them to just allow trailers to be played in a script. Then users could create their own pre-roll into a feature if they choose. I just don't know if they would do it as it seems scripting isn't used enough for them to continue to enhance it.

They don't even bother promoting the scripting feature, which is odd. The only promotion of scripts comes from external conversations.

Agreed. I think they are missing an opportunity to differentiate from discs. They should lean into scripting and user scenes more and make them easier to create, share, and use. It feels like they could be discovered and shared much easier, almost like a social platform, and that would be a unique selling point. Just my two cents, for whatever that's worth.

Yeah...in addition to allowing trailers in scripts....adding various Dolby, DTS, etc clips to the store would be nice as well. Thou probably some odd non sensical licensing thing involved with that. Never understood why Dolby, etc would not want as much publicity as possible.

I would think such capability for trade shows and such would be ideal for K.

Imagine you don't know anything about home theater and surround sound, and someone you know invites you over to show off their "home theater." You walk in, sit down, and they have a system that's all KRACO bookshelf speakers and no sub, and everything is stuffed into a cubby hole in the entertainment center above the TV. Now they crank it up past distortion and play you a Dolby trailer. And you walk out thinking "I don't know what the hype is all about, that sounded like crap, I'm not paying for Dolby anything."

It's an exaggeration, but also it's not, and that's why Dolby doesn't allow trailer downloads like Trinnov does. That's why they're not at the beginning of discs anymore. Dolby has spent decades building a brand reputation and is now in 'Protect & Maintain' mode. They need to make sure their brand is associated with high end experiences, not every sound system that some dude hooked a few white van car subwoofers to.

Trinnov is still trying to build that brand awareness outside of the high-end boutique market. They still want people to hear the name, see something cool, and try to learn more.

Scripts can already play trailers. The catch is that the trailer has to be a bookmarked, downloaded media object that is included as an extra from a store purchase (or is bookmarked as an extra on the disc of an imported/cataloged movie -- if you have a system capable of disc playback).

What a script can't play are streaming trailers since:
  1. they are provided by a 3rd-party service and thus can become unavailable at any time;
  2. they are of lesser video and/or audio quality and will likely look horrible on your large theatre screen (see @thrillcat 's "OMG! Dolby audio is crap!" example above); and,
  3. they require an active internet connection which cannot be guaranteed and would thus break your script at the most inopportune time.
