How do I know if a Cinematic 4k title has HDR?

I've purchased some 4KC titles only to learn when downloading that there isn't an HDR option (only DV and SDR). I'm finding this weird, especially when there is a non-cinematic 4k HDR version.

I can understand if there wasn't a DV option, but no HDR seems rather strange.

I think this was explained by K in the the thread which has since been nuked. Lol.

Iirc, if the mezzanine file is received with full 4:4:4 Chroma then you would invariably see HDR10 cinematic (4.4:4 chroma). However in the case wherein the mezzanine doesn’t include 4:4:4 chroma, then only DV cinematic (4:2:2) would be considered.

There are some exceptions e.g. Bohemian Rhapsody which is HDR10 cinematic 4:2:2. I’m sure there are few others out there in the wild as well.

Hmmm, ok I guess I wasted some money lol.

What troubles me is that there is no way to determine this beforehand.

On the website, click formats. It will show all formats separately. On the app, select where it says the resolution and a popup with the same info appears.

Also, when you download, you should be able to hit change and select which version you would like to download. I had an SDR projector and it selected that as the best format. I went hit change on a purchase or to redownload and downloaded all the HDR content.

You can download the Cinematic DV. The player will convert it to Cinematic HDR with 4:2:2 when you play it.

Since the player converts it on the fly there is no point in having a two "identical" files.

IIRC there was an issue with the DV to HDR conversion that was identified in the now-nuked other thread referenced earlier.

That led to Kscape offering a standalone HDR10 4KC version.

I wish I could remember exactly what the issue was, but people seemed to appreciate the HDR10 version.

I also remember it was something, but not exactly what it was. Whatever it was I think it was fixed in last update. I usually go for the Cinematic HDR when available and Cinematic DV when HDR is not available.

There were errors in the DV to HDR conversion that were resulting in incorrect colors and raised blacks. The last software release claimed to address "some" of these, but Rmarci confirmed that the DV to HDR conversion appeared accurate. However, there may still be some outstanding issues with select DV encodes.

Theoretically once all sides are addressed the DV version may become the recommended version for all non-SDR-limited users.
