Strato E issue, rewinding enables the subtitles

Holy gawd ! As I new Strato E user (and otherwise loving it) this feature is driving me CRAZY!!!!

I do lots of testing and scrolling around various movies and every damn time I rewind it turns on the subtitles!

So if I have scrolled back a few minutes, I have to sit there watching minutes of the damn subtitles on the screen when I don’t want to be seeing.

I thought for sure this would be a user selectable thing and I went looking everywhere how to turn it off and then I discovered this thread. What an absolute bummer.

How in the world is this not a feature that can’t be turned off???!!

Not being able to turn this off is certainly is the most user unfriendly feature on this product.
Yeah its annoying. Whomever made the decision to not make this an option should not be allowed to make decisions again.

When you go back, just like Apple TV, the subtitles go on till you return to the original point where you started the rewind.
If you only back a little, just wait and it will automatically turn off.
The feature is used in case you didn’t hear what was said.

We know why the feature exists. The point is that many of us don't want it. It is easily turned off on the Apple TV.

I agree, this should be an option in our players. It doesn't bother me that much, I seriously doubt I'd turn it off given the option. I'd continue to operate as I am now. I see that not everyone is the same as me and I would prefer to see that option be available.

Has anyone sent an Email?

This has been adressed since the feature was introduced and K is aware.

Subtitles should always be an option, I hate them with a passion unless it’s a foreign language and even then I only tolerate them because I’m too much of a troglodyte to learn another language!

Clearly this feature had all the old rich people in mind with their failing hearing 😜.

If it's a foreign language and you only tolerate them, how do you expect to understand the dialogue without them? In that situation are they not necessary?

Some people have hearing loss related to playing too much loud music, working in a loud environment, too much clubbing or concerts, etc.

My grandchildren demand them, and I like them for programs that have strong foreign accents and rapid talking. IMO, they were necessary to understand what was going on in HBO's Industry and ATV's Slow Horses where lots of foreign dialect slang is used.

Regardless, I totally agree that this backup feature should be a option.

BTW, you will be an old person before you know it and hopefully happy to have made it!

Ironically, shortly after I posted my complaint, I thought I had stumbled onto something close to fix.

I was watching scenes from Star Trek into darkness and if I chose no subtitles before I wound, then I would not get subtitles upon reminding. In fact, it seemed I only had to choose that once, and I could rewind around the film and not get subtitles.

Not perfect, but at least it would seem to be better than what I was dealing with.

However, I just tried it now on some other movies and it didn’t work so reliably.
On an Indiana Jones movie, whether I turned off or not I would always get subtitles if I scrolled backwards.

Then I tried it on a Star Wars movie, and it kind of worked inconsistently for me.

Then I tried it on Superman and it was a bit inconsistent, but then at one point, the subtitles essentially disappeared once scrolling backwards.

Hmmm…

I’m only saying that in jest, people who are actually young already think I’m old 😂. I do however look after my ears, my clubbing days are long since gone and I’ve never been heavily into music for anything more than background noise so don’t do concerts or blast music into my ears. Movies and gaming are my only electronic based hobbies.

Yes, as I say, ideally I’d want to understand every language that crops up so I don’t need to have subtitles whether that be French, Spanish, Japanese, Cantonese etc. but my forte is numbers not languages.

The reason I really dislike them is because you then spend your time reading the subtitles not able to look at what is actually going on fully.

If people want to have it as a feature that’s fine but I don’t want anything that turns on subtitles for any English speaking ever. If I’m rewinding it’s probably because I fell asleep from old age not because I couldn’t hear something and at one point it was because my Strato V had random audio dropouts so it was doubly annoying unwanted subtitles also came on!

Before you hit play, just go to the subtitle menu in the movie and turn off subtitles. You do have to do it every time you rewind. But you don’t have to wait for it to auto turn off.

Could you explain that a little more detail?

At first, I was wondering what that could mean because you have to hit play for the movie to appear, and therefore even offer sending like subtitles, etc. So it would seem impossible to choose that before hitting play.

What I did end up doing was pressing pause, and then turning off the subtitles, and then rewinding and playing.

That actually seemed to work for a while, and on some titles. But then other times it didn’t seem to work.

So I’m wondering if you have some tweak to this method.

I have hearing loss...do I sometimes turn on subtitles...yes!. Do I want some company deciding when subtitles should be turned on...NO!
