I'm all for quality and "lossless" ... up to a point. For me, it would irk me to think that 6.7GB per DVD were spent on each "Fawlty Towers" or "Monty Python" disc -- the quality of the source simply doesn't warrant that much storage. Similarly, to know that 80GB is necessary to store the "Thunderbirds" DVD collection is just over-kill.
What I think would be cool would be to have an option to transcode the import to mpeg-4 (with selectable quality). This wouldn't be useful on good quality "reference" material, but would be great for all those older TV shows ...

as soon as you start mucking with the content... the complexity, quality and reliability of the product goes downhill.

It looks good on paper, but in a larger scheme, it is hard to make something like that work. an option to skip extra content and the like would be good though.

Keep in mind at the end of the day, the one-time capital cost of storage space is likely to be significantly cheaper than the ongoing operational cost of managing different compression schemes etc by software.
