Terra (compact) audible sound and difficulty reading prompts

Does the Terra have an audible drive spinning like sound? I have it in my cabinet and I can always hear it, clearly when I turn it off you can tell the difference.

Just wondering because lately I’ve had some “difficulty reading movie” errors stall video. It picks up again, almost like it’s buffering but I don’t think that’s it. It’s happened a lot on Black Phone, so I’m redownloading it again. But, it just happened on Bourne Identity as well. Please tell me my drive isn’t failing, It’s only about two weeks old.

Hard to say for sure, and while it's unlikely to be a hard drive issue, it's possible. These are usually networking problems (cables, switches, etc.) or HDMI EDID problems, but neither of those rules out the Terra. Support will need to look at your systems logs to see what is causing the dropouts.

I thought I would post here but let me know if I should start a new thread.

We have had a 12Tb terra server since June and (shamefacedly) filled it up already and so earlier today had a further 18Tb server installed in the same location.

The original server has been as quiet as a mouse but today I could hear the new server from outside the cupboard which was a worry. The sound ‘maybe’ a very noisy fan noise and TBH I can’t imagine what else it might be. I checked the temperatures and both servers at the time were sitting at 43c and solidly in the green zone according to the bar chart. Now the full one is sitting at 42 and the new one has dropped to 38c but that if that is a fan it is still whirling away regardless.

So my obvious question is what on earth is that noise and surely it can’t be right can it?
As an aside, while looking at the servers I noticed that the player (none of this is been in use since lunchtime ( 11 hours ago) is showing as at 55c inactive. Is that right?

The ambient temp is circa 24c btw.

The kit is in a tall cupboard with that is extracted when anything is being used and we haven’t had any over heating issues in there and tbh doesn’t feel particularly warm when you open the door.

I have alerted the installer and will speak again after Holiday Monday but I thought I would ask what experiences you have had with noise. Particularly if you have an 18tb or larger terra server. Thanks and happy watching

Well I can tell you my 6TB terra has always had a noise to it, the Strato C is silent. I’m assuming the noise is a fan or just the hard disks spinning all the time.

My terra is always very in the green and never gets hot even during playback or back to back to back download sessions. I also keep it inside a BDI ventilated cabinet for now until my HT install is finished and place it in a rack.

Have you ever noticed at what temp it typically runs?

BTW mine is in a rack in the cupboard (probably should have been clearer.

My Terra is at the top of a hall closet with a thermostat controlled exhaust fan and it is typically around 44-46F. Never had an issue or noticed any noise (knock on wood).

Thanks both. It doesn’t sound like this noise is ‘normal’ or to be expected then. The heat levels seem typical but not the noise.
I will pursue it with the dealer on Tuesday and see what arises. If others have comments/thoughts then please let me know.

Anyway you can do a recording of the noise and post/send it to me via PM. I wouldn’t mind comparing it to mine to see.

Will see what i can do. I have a 12Tb and that’s all but silent. I wondered if the bigger disk versions maybe generate more heat but even if they don't I can’t believe they would use a noisy fan. I have some more investigating to do in the cabinet but I need a ladder :)
I am not exceptionally short but the cabinet goes to the ceiling. :)

I hope that’s not the case with the size, mine is the smaller 6TB. It’s never had any issues though.
