Jim,
I visit this forum every day for tips, information, and answers. For me, this is the best moderated forum I have ever participated in and is ultimately what convinced me last year to become a Kaleidescape owner (Premier). While you have been accused of being pro K which one would think would be universal on a K owner’s forum that has never prevented anyone from posting K concerns or complaints.
With that said, everyone is different. Some people are not as fortunate as I am for instance as I share a home with dogs. When I come home they are always excited to see me. They jump up and down and wag their tales. They can’t get over it. They will listen with rapt attention to any rant or even undeveloped premise I utter. I could even read from the dictionary and they would stare in rapt awe. “Hey Buttons, do you know what a formula is?”
It’s easy for me to forget the less fortunate, those who don’t live with dogs. In a dog less world they must seek other outlets. They take a broad interpretation of the word “ideas” to include rants, un-researched complaints, and feelings. They may even cut and paste excerpts from the dictionary that does not appear to support their rant, but when confronted with kind suggestions they respond with baseless accusations. Their posts always end with the statement that they don’t care what other’s think, which seems akin to an alcoholic stating “I don’t have a problem, you have a problem.” They don’t care about your opinion, so they are going to post again to make sure you know they don’t care about your opinion.
While I think these people need a support group more than a forum, nonetheless these posts seem inevitable in a forum. We don’t all have dogs which may be the only creatures interested in our feelings and the like. I have no interest in reading a post like that, after all we didn’t even have feelings when I was kid. While I find scrolling through such posts tedious, these folks appear to find a catharsis by venting, even though dogs appear to have very little access to blogs. However I do admit if my dog could access a blog he would hang on every word unless a butterfly entered the room.
Here’s an idea, how about creating a win/win. Have a new thread category, “The 3 R’s Rants/Raves/Rumors. This would allow people who have these needs to share their idea-feelings and those who enjoy reading such (maybe cat people?) an opportunity to obtain what they enjoy from a forum without hijacking an otherwise useful thread or getting further frustrated when people attempt to recommend proactive solutions for their problems which appears to miss the purpose of their rant.
You could even give their feelings special prominence by removing it from a fact based proactive thread and “promoting” it to their own thread in the 3 R’s section where they could really share their idea-feelings in the comfort afforded by an audience drawn to such.
Might be a bad idea but thought I would throw that out for what it is worth. Thanks again for a great forum.
