Strato Storage Options.

Are the Terra or another Strato the only options for additional storage? Or do any of the old models compatible with the Strato? IF so are there limitations like DVD, OR DVD/BD only, so no UHD?

Thanks for any info.

In the Encore line, the only devices that have storage are Strato, Alto, and Terra. Alto does not support UHD playback but does have an optical drive and supports cataloging and playback of DVDs and Blu-ray discs.

Note that you can only group a maximum of 4 player devices with storage in system so if you need to support more than 4 zones (or you want to setup Co-star in more than 2 zones), you should be looking at Strato C (player with no storage) and using Terra server(s) for your storage.

Addressing the "older" model compatibility with Strato question, here's a refresher.

Kaleidescape has two completely separate entertainment systems, the older Premiere line, and the newer Encore line.

PREMIERE line:
Servers: 1U, 1U+, 3U, and 5U (The 1U+ is the newest Premiere server and the only Premiere server still available from Kaleidescape.).

Players: Current players are the M-Class players (M300, M500, M700 (Vault/Player combo). Older Premiere players include the 5000, 6000, etc.

Player/Server combo: Cinema One (2 gen's)

Vaults: M700 (noted above), and the DV700 (originally Importing and disc storage only, but later modified to playback the stored physical discs when paired with the Alto. Can also playback physical DVD (not BR) when paired with a Strato). There is also an older KVAULT-10 that was used while K was developing its own Vaults.

The Premiere line works with both physical discs (Imports them), and the K Store (downloads content). It does not directly work with the Encore line (i.e. components are not compatible), and cannot access any of the content stored in Encore components.

ENCORE Line:
Alto Player: 6TB is only available Alto from K. (Cannot playback 4K content)
Strato-S Players w/storage (currently only 6TB and 12TB available from K).
Strato-C player (no internal storage, playback only)
Terra Servers: Currently two storage options, 24TB and 40TB.

With exception to playing back physical discs from one of the Premiere Vaults, the Encore line gets all of its content from the K Store, and cannot access any imported content stored in a Premiere system.

The Co-Star Switch Kit (and subsequent Co-Star licenses for Crestron and Lumagen) allows the content stored in both systems to be accessed from the On-screen guide simultaneously, but playback will still be restricted to the appropriate component (i.e. select a movie stored in Premiere and the Premiere player connected to Co-Star is used for playback, the same for Encore).

Guess I was hoping one of the older servers would be compatible with the Strato in general as well as be able to support UHD, and not just DVD/BD. It appears that's the case.

The Cinema One and the Alto always seem like such a very similar product so I find it interesting that the Cinema One doesn't work with the Strato but the Alto does. But again that's not the case.

As I was told I basically need another Strato or Terra to do what I really want.

Thanks everyone.

Correct, the Premiere system does not, and never will, support UHD. UHD is exclusive to Strato (and Terra for additional storage), and only available through the K Store. T

My apologies for reviving an old thread, but this helpful list was the most concise to reply to:

What's the most affordable entry level way to access the 4K kstore library?

If new, would it be the Strato C and smallest Terra server?

If used, the original Strato, or Strato S?

I apologize if this was answered elsewhere and I couldn't find it. For now, Kaleidoscape is only a dream, but in an era when physical disk releases are becoming rare, I hope to one day snag a deal so I'm not stuck with streaming quality as my only option!

You are correct, the lowest entry point to access the Store's 4K content using "new" components is the Terra Prime 8TB and Strato-C.

You are also likely correct that, if using "used" components to access the Store's 4K content, then the original Strato, or Strato-S, would be the most affordable entry. I indicate "likely" because obviously used prices are dictated by the Seller, so other factors could make a used Terra and Strato-C more affordable based on what's available in the marketplace.

I sent you a PM as well.
