Strato S paired to Alto - HDMI handshake issue?

grit

Well-known member
I have my Alto paired to my Strato, each has its own HDMI cable going to a Trinnov Altitude 16 (the most recent version), and then out to a Sony A9G right now. The Strato works fine. I also have an Oppo BDP-203 and an Apple TV 4k, both of which also work fine. HDMI cables are Audioquest Carbons.

When I use the Strato to select a cataloged Blu-ray movie and then "insert disc" to watch it, I manually switch over to the HDMI input for the Alto. Video is fine. However, I don't have audio. If I unplug the HDMI cable and force a resync, I get audio back (and video) and it stays just fine. I also tried selecting a different input on the Trinnov, then selecting back to the Alto's input. That did not fix the problem.

Any ideas/suggestions? I suspect it has something to do with HDMI handshaking.

Thanks,

- Garrett

Out of curiosity, what would happen if you got everything all set to hit "play", then switched the Trinnov input, *then* pressed play?

When players are Co-Star paired, the inactive player leaves the HDMI input turned off until you press play. I'm just wondering if there's something odd happening if it turns that output on before the Trinnov is looking at the corresponding input.

Okay. It may be worth getting our support folks involved at this point, so that they can pull diagnostic logs and possibly get the appropriate engineering people to take a look as well. As you know, the configuration you're using is not a supported Co-Star configuration, which means it's not something we've tested. It may be exposing some kind of compatibility issue between the Alto and the Trinnov that doesn't show up in normal (non Co-Star) circumstances.

Did you try just using the normal costar switch? I use this setup in our family room and pretty much been super solid. Use Lumagen for switching in our theater.

No, I don't have a Costar switch. I imagine that would probably fix the problem though. I'd just rather not spend $500 on feature I don't use that often, specially since I'm trying to duplicate all of my discs on my Kscape librar (eventually).
