Strange issue with Kaleidescape IP address

My UniFi network blew up the other day so I had to replace several components in my network. I have since noticed in the UniFi app that my Kaleidescape 1U server is changing IP address every few seconds. It keeps going from a 192 IP address to a 169 address.

I don’t recall observing this previously. Is this normal? Assuming not, thoughts on what might be the issue?

Thanks!

Is everything working correctly? If so, you may just not have noticed it or had it setup with a static IP before. Unifi will default to DHCP using dynamic IP address. Totally normal for internal routing.

I see the same on my UniFi network. I think it’s just a display issue in UniFi.

From another thread:

I have some UniFi equipment (switches and WAPs only, I use pfsense for my router/firewall), and I will occasionally see my K equipment listed as having a 169.254.x.x address. I don’t think this is actually a problem because it’s always accessible by the 10.x.x.x address that I assigned to it. As far as I can tell, K equipment continues to use 169.254.x.x as a secondary address for discovering other components. This is how your K equipment can discover other components with a static IP in a different subnet.

My 1U Premiere server looks the same in Unifi. The server actually uses both addresses, so the Unifi interface keeps changing the address that is displayed because it's seeing activity with both and doesn't know how to display it. You can even access the browser interface with the 169.254.x.x address (this might need some extra setup on your PC, so the OS knows how to route it properly).

I assume that they do this so that Kaleidescape components can more easily find other components with misconfigured static IP addresses. For example, if you go to the "add component" page, it will show all devices on the local network, even if they are on a different subnet. I'm pretty sure it's using the 169.254.x.x address to discover them.

Thanks everyone. I think the reason I never noticed this previously is that while I was reconfiguring things, I changed the default sort order of clients in the UniFi app to sort by IP address rather than device name. So, the Kaleidescape device kept jumping around in the list. Seemed odd, but I understand now that it’s normal.

Thanks!

Thanks for confirming!
