Replacement M500 Drive

Thought I would share:-

I recently had one of my out of warranty M500 players decide it would stop reading CD's & DVD's although Blu-Ray's worked perfectly so I decided to open the player and try a replacement.

Original drive was an LG UH08LS10 (Firmware 2.02) which is long discontinued and as I had a spare LG CH12NS30 which is still current I did the swap and it works.

Not sure if this was luck or if other drives will work but as this is still a current LG drive if you have similar issues at around $60 it is worth a try.

How hard is it to fit? Do you have to strip it of its casing as it looks too big to fit in theM500 chassis?

Very easy, all you need is a screwdriver and takes around 10 minutes.

Unplug the player from the electricity supply and best to work on an earthed surface to remove the potential of static electric damage. Remove screws holding the player lid in place and slide the lid off, unplug the power and data cable at the back of the drive and then remove the 4 screws (2 done from outside the case and 2 on the internal upright) that hold the drive in place and lift the drive out.

You will see the existing drive has had the tray front removed (where the drive manufacturer logo would normally be) so this is the only 'modification' needed to the new drive and this is easily removed as it is just held in place by 3 plastic 'lugs' which you simply press in and then slide the draw front off.

Slot the new drive in, secure with the 4 screws and re-attach the power and data connectors and test.

Put the lid back on and that is the job completed.
